Overview
Siemens Digital Industries Software is the industrial-software business of Siemens AG. History
The business originated in the American CAD/CAM software industry. United Computing was established in 1963 in Torrance, California, and released UNIAPT in 1969. It later acquired the ADAM codebase from MCS, using it as a foundation for Unigraphics, which entered commercial use in 1975. McDonnell Douglas acquired United Computing in 1976 and developed the Unigraphics Group into a significant CAD/CAM operation. EDS acquired McDonnell Douglas' systems-integration activities, including Unigraphics, in 1991. EDS later organized the operation as Unigraphics Solutions, which acquired businesses including Engineering Animation and Applicon. The company adopted the UGS name in 2001. EDS combined UGS with SDRC and related Nastran assets to form EDS PLM Solutions. After EDS sold that business to Bain Capital, Silver Lake Partners and Warburg Pincus in 2004, the operation again traded under the UGS name. UGS acquired Tecnomatix in 2005, adding manufacturing-process planning and production software. Siemens agreed to acquire UGS in January 2007 for approximately $3.5 billion. Following the transaction, UGS became Siemens PLM Software and was incorporated into Siemens' industrial automation activities.
