Overview

Shoppyland Schönbühl is a major shopping centre in the Swiss canton of Bern, located largely in the municipality of Moosseedorf, about 8 km north of the city of Bern and adjacent to Urtenen-Schönbühl. Despite its name, the centre is not situated in Schönbühl proper but in Moosseedorf. It is owned by the Genossenschaft Migros Aare, the Migros cooperative for the Aare region, which also has its headquarters and administration next to the centre. Opened on 6 March 1975, Shoppyland was one of the first decentralised shopping centres in Switzerland. It has grown to become the fifth-largest shopping centre in the country and the largest in the Espace Mittelland, with more than 80 shops. The centre underwent a complete renovation between 2006 and 2010, reopening at the end of April 2010. The centre consists of two buildings: the main "Shoppyland" building to the northeast and the "OBI Fachmarktcenter" to the southwest, connected by a pedestrian bridge over the motorway. The main building has a basement, ground floor and three upper floors, with the centre management on the third floor. The second building has a ground floor and an upper floor. Shoppyland offers seven parking areas, three of them outdoors. Shoppyland is well connected by road, lying at the fork of the A1 and A6 motorways, and by public transport through its own RBS S-Bahn station linking it with Bern and Jegenstorf. The centre hosts a wide range of retail and service tenants, including fashion and shoes, services, children's offerings, home and garden, gastronomy, media and electronics, food and beverages, cosmetics and health, centre services, leisure, sport, watches, jewellery and opticians, and a specialist market centre. It also played a role in Swiss payment history: in 1987, Migros-Genossenschaft Bern, together with Migros Bank, conducted a test with POS terminals at Shoppyland, marking the beginning of cashless payment at Migros. The Postomat Plus card, a precursor to the Postfinance Card, was first used in 1988. Today Shoppyland remains an active regional shopping destination, hosting events such as family pirate adventures and offering gift ideas from its shops.

History

Shoppyland Schönbühl opened on 6 March 1975 as one of the first decentralised shopping centres in Switzerland. It was developed by the Genossenschaft Migros Aare, the Migros cooperative for the Aare region, which remains its owner. The centre is located largely in the municipality of Moosseedorf, about 8 km north of Bern, adjacent to Urtenen-Schönbühl, despite bearing the name Schönbühl. From 2006 to 2010, the entire centre was renovated and modernised, with the reopening taking place at the end of April 2010. This comprehensive renewal allowed Shoppyland to maintain its position as the largest shopping centre in the Espace Mittelland and the fifth-largest in Switzerland, with over 80 shops. In 1987, the Migros-Genossenschaft Bern, together with Migros Bank, conducted a test with POS terminals at Shoppyland, marking the beginning of cashless payment at Migros. The Postomat Plus card, a precursor to the Postfinance Card, was first used in 1988, further cementing the centre's role in Swiss retail payment innovation. Today, Shoppyland continues to operate as a major regional shopping destination, hosting events such as pirate-themed family adventures and offering a wide range of retail and service tenants.
