Overview

Shopping Arena Alpenstraße is a shopping centre located on Alpenstraße in the south of Salzburg, Austria. It opened in 2015 as the successor to the Shopping Center Alpenstraße (SCA), which had been built in 1990. The centre occupies two building sections on either side of Alpenstraße, at numbers 107 and 114, and includes a parking garage with 720 spaces. Its name and visual identity were created by the Bregenz-based firm Silberball. The original SCA opened on 26 April 1990 and was the first shopping centre of its kind in the city. It had a total area of 13,000 m², of which 9,000 m² was sales space, spread across two buildings linked by an underground shopping passage. After the opening of the Europark in the west of the city in 1997, the SCA lost significance because it lacked space. Around 2000 an architecture firm presented conversion plans that were not implemented, and in 2008 there was a change of ownership. In spring 2011 the Salzburg city design advisory board approved an expansion to 24,000 m², involving the complete demolition of the west-side building at Alpenstraße 114 and the conversion of the east part. The groundbreaking took place in April 2012, and the new building, estimated at 60 million euros, was completed and opened in spring 2015. With the reopening, the name was changed to Shopping Arena. Today the centre houses shops from various sectors, gastronomy and other services, as well as events for children and adults. Its tenant mix includes dm Drogeriemarkt, Eurospar, Trattoria Gustini, Klipp, Mister Minit & Paketdienst, Xaver – Cafe.Küche.Bar, Le Café and Fräulein Anna. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 19:00 and Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00, with special opening hours on certain dates and closures on Austrian public holidays. It is served by trolleybus lines 3, 8, 28, 170, 175 and 840, stopping at Ginzkeyplatz/Shopping Arena, and is accessible from the A10 Tauernautobahn via the Salzburg Süd exit. Since autumn 2015 the centre has published its own customer magazine, Shopping Arena Live.
