Overview
Shipyard Brewing Company is a family-owned and operated craft brewery based in Portland, Maine. It was founded in 1994 by Fred Forsley and master brewer Alan Pugsley, following their 1992 launch of Federal Jack's Restaurant & Brew Pub in Kennebunkport, Maine. The brewery operates a tasting room and brewery store in downtown Portland and produces a range of beers including Pumpkinhead Ale, Export Golden Ale, Summer Ale, Finder New England IPA, and Boatload Berry Wheat Ale.
History
Shipyard Brewing Company traces its origins to 1992, when Fred Forsley and master brewer Alan Pugsley started Federal Jack's Restaurant & Brew Pub in Kennebunkport Harbor, Maine. The launch coincided with the birth of America's craft beer industry. In 1992, Forsley and Pugsley served the first Shipyard Export Ale at Federal Jack's. Two years later, in 1994, demand outpaced the pub's brewing capacity, and they opened the Shipyard Brewing Company in Portland, Maine, at the former Laughlin foundry on Casco Bay. In 1996, Shipyard brewed its first barrels of Pumpkinhead Ale. In 2014, Shipyard expanded brewing operations.
