History

Shiono Koryo Kaisha's roots trace to the drug wholesaler Shionoya Yoshibei Shoten, founded in 1808 in Osaka's Doshomachi, an area known as a medicine town. In 1908, the third-generation Yoshibei's eldest son, Kotaro, decided to change the business and began importing and selling ginger ale flavoring, renaming the shop Shiono Yoshibei Shoten. During the import difficulties of World War I, the company began manufacturing flavors in-house, and in 1921 developed Japan's first domestically produced lemon essence, later expanding to orange, banana and other items, distributed as 'Ogi-jirushi' essence from 1924. In December 1929, the fourth-generation Yoshibei transformed the business from a sole proprietorship into a stock company, Shiono Koryo Kaisha, Ltd. In 1941 the company changed its name to Shiono Kako Co., Ltd. and concentrated production technology outside flavors; it succeeded in developing polystyrene and achieved Japan's first industrialization of the resin in 1943. After the war it returned to the flavor business, and in 1951 reverted to the name Shiono Koryo Kaisha, Ltd.
