Overview
Shinsapporo Arc City Sunpiazza (新さっぽろアークシティ サンピアザ) is a shopping center and mixed-use commercial complex located in the Shin-Sapporo sub-center of Atsubetsu-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. It opened in 1977 as the Sunpiazza Shopping Center, developed around a four-story atrium called the "Hikari no Hiroba" (Plaza of Light). The facility combines the Sunpiazza specialty-store mall, the AEON Shin-Sapporo general merchandise store, the Shin-Sapporo Sunpiazza Aquarium, the multipurpose Sunpiazza Theater, clinics, banks, and other services. Together with the connected Shin-Sapporo Arc City Duo, it forms the commercial core of the area marketed under the nickname "Shin-Sapporo Arc City." The complex has evolved through several ownership and branding changes. Its original general merchandise anchor was Daiei's Atsubetsu store, which later became Daiei Shin-Sapporo and, after AEON Hokkaido took over Daiei's Hokkaido GMS operations in 2015, AEON Shin-Sapporo. A department store wing opened in 1982 as Printemps Shin-Sapporo, was renamed Catepuri Shin-Sapporo in 2000, became AEON Catepuri Shin-Sapporo in 2015, and was finally integrated into the Sunpiazza name in September 2025. The Sunpiazza Theater, opened in 1981, operated as a cinema from 1984 to 2004 and then as a multipurpose hall until it closed in 2022. Today the complex is operated by the Sapporo Fuku-Toshin Kaihatsu Kosha (Sapporo Sub-Center Development Corporation), which took over the Catepuri wing from AEON Mall in July 2024. The September 2025 renewal unified both buildings under the Sunpiazza name. The center remains directly connected to Shin-Sapporo Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Tozai Line and is about a one-minute walk from JR Hokkaido's Shin-Sapporo Station.
History
The Sunpiazza Shopping Center opened in 1977 in the Shin-Sapporo sub-center of Atsubetsu-ku, Sapporo, with Daiei's Atsubetsu store as its general merchandise anchor. The complex was built around a four-story atrium known as the "Hikari no Hiroba" (Plaza of Light), which has hosted events since opening. In 1982, the underground specialty store street "Metro Mall" opened, along with the Sunpiazza Aquarium and the department store Printemps Shin-Sapporo. The Sunpiazza Hall, opened in 1981 as a multipurpose event hall, was renamed Sunpiazza Theater in 1984 when it became a cinema. In 2000, following the expiration of the licensing agreement between Daiei and the French department store Printemps, Printemps Shin-Sapporo was renamed Catepuri Shin-Sapporo. The Sunpiazza Theater ceased cinema operations in 2004 and reopened as a multipurpose hall in 2005. In 2015, AEON Hokkaido took over Daiei's Hokkaido general merchandise store business, and the Daiei Shin-Sapporo store and Catepuri Shin-Sapporo were renamed AEON Shin-Sapporo and AEON Catepuri Shin-Sapporo, respectively. A major renovation by AEON Mall followed in 2016 and 2017, with the first phase opening in 2016 and the second in 2017, adding a large food court, food sales areas, and new tenants. In 2022, the Sunpiazza Theater closed. In June 2023, it was announced that Catepuri's operations would be transferred from AEON Mall to the facility owner, the Sapporo Fuku-Toshin Kaihatsu Kosha, effective July 1, 2024. On August 14, 2025, the corporation announced that the Catepuri name would be discontinued and integrated into Sunpiazza from the September 12, 2025 renewal, unifying store guidance for both buildings under the Sunpiazza name.
