Overview
The Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Foundation is a public-interest incorporated foundation whose stated purpose is to elevate economic morality based on the 'unity of morality and economy' doctrine advocated and practiced by Shibusawa Eiichi (1840–1931, pen name Seien). Its core activities are the operation of the Shibusawa Memorial Museum, the conversion of materials into information resources and promotion of their use, the building of intellectual networks, and the advancement of research on Shibusawa Eiichi. The museum opened in 1982 on the site of the former Shibusawa residence and collects, preserves, and exhibits materials on Eiichi's life and achievements. The foundation's Information Resources Center and Research Center carry out related information and research programs.
History
The foundation's origins trace to April 1886, when young men lodging in the study room of the Shibusawa residence in Fukagawa, Tokyo, formed a study and presentation society. Ogata Atsutada (Eiichi's cousin, 1830–1901), who guided them, named the group 'Ryumonsha' after the Chinese story of a carp climbing a waterfall to become a dragon. In 1909, following Eiichi's advice, the members agreed on principles and rules, establishing the basis for development as a new organization. In 1924, Ryumonsha became an incorporated foundation. In 1931 Shibusawa Eiichi, the mainstay of its activities, died. After the war, led by his grandson Shibusawa Keizo (1896–1963), Ryumonsha was rebuilt; in 1946 it absorbed the Shibusawa Seien-o Kinenkai and took the name 'Shibusawa Seien Memorial Foundation Ryumonsha'. It received back the former Shibusawa residence in Asukayama, Oji, Tokyo, which had been donated to the state near the end of the war, and used it as its base, compiling and publishing the 68-volume 'Shibusawa Eiichi Denki Shiryo'. The foundation's current name is Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Foundation, with the former name Shibusawa Seien Memorial Foundation Ryumonsha.
