Overview
Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital (深圳市中医院) is a Shenzhen municipal public TCM hospital and a National Grade 3A hospital, founded in 1975. It is described as Shenzhen's earliest TCM medical institution and one of the second-batch Guangdong Province high-level hospital key construction hospitals. It is also affiliated as Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine Affiliated Shenzhen TCM Hospital, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine Affiliated Shenzhen Hospital, and Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine Fourth Clinical Medical College. Its official site describes it as founded in 1975 and as the leading unit of Shenzhen's TCM undertaking, operating with the Futian campus and Guangming campus as its "one body, two wings" together with a first outpatient department, an acupuncture-tuina international medical center, and a science-education center. It is among the first batch of National Grade 3A TCM hospitals and is the first non-directly-affiliated hospital and Fourth Clinical Medical College of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.
History
The hospital's predecessor was Bao'an County TCM Hospital, established in 1975; in 1979, with the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, it was renamed Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. At the time of founding, the hospital had fixed assets of 5,300 yuan, 29 employees, and 47,500 total patient visits. In February 1975, Bao'an County TCM Hospital was established (administrative level: section level), borrowing eight rooms on the second floor of the Bao'an County People's Hospital outpatient department to begin consultations. In 1977, construction of the first outpatient building was planned. In 1978, the Bao'an County government approved the current first outpatient department (No. 3015 Jiefang Road, Luohu District, Shenzhen) as the hospital site. In March 1979, with the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Bao'an County TCM Hospital was renamed Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital (administrative level: county deputy section level), with 42 employees. In the 1980s, the hospital leveraged its proximity to Hong Kong and Macau to pursue reform through internal and external cooperation and joint medical operations, successively establishing cooperative medical institutions such as the Overseas Chinese Hospital and opening a stone treatment center, anorectal medical center, and cosmetic plastic surgery center. Fixed assets grew from 5,300 yuan to 3.2849 million yuan, staff grew from 29 to 309, 47 beds were opened, and total patient visits grew from 47,500 to 380,718. In July 1980, the hospital's outpatient comprehensive building was completed and opened, with a business area of 1,676 square meters, 53 cadres and staff, and departments including internal medicine, acupuncture, orthopedics and traumatology, gynecology, electrocardiography room, electroencephalography room, and Chinese and Western pharmacies. In November 1981, the hospital jointly established the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Overseas Chinese Hospital with a Hong Kong businessman (Hong Kong China Medical University Alumni Association), with surgery, internal medicine, and gynecology departments, 60 beds, and 50 staff. In June 1982, the hospital's administrative level was raised to county full section level. In August 1983, it cooperated with Guang'anmen Hospital of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine to open an anorectal medical center at the Overseas Chinese Hospital. In December 1983, with the support of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and approval by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, it planned to build an inpatient department and second outpatient department at No. 1 Fuhua Road, Futian District. In August 1984, with the agreement of the Shenzhen Municipal Institutional Organization Commission and the Municipal Health Bureau, the hospital was organized at the deputy division level and established the Shenzhen Anorectal Disease Research Institute. In September 1984, it cooperated with Zhanjiang Medical College to open a cosmetic plastic surgery center at the Overseas Chinese Hospital. In January 1985, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the outpatient and inpatient building. In March 1985, it jointly established a massage and tuina center with the Nanchang Massage Hospital and a waist and leg pain specialty clinic with the Lanzhou Military Region General Hospital. In May 1985, the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government approved the establishment of Shenzhen Shizhen Company for Chinese and Western medicine processing. In July 1985, it prepared a preparation room, producing 5 dosage forms and 25 kinds of Chinese patent medicines that year. In December 1985, a 400-square-meter simple outpatient clinic was completed on Huaqiang South Road and began receiving patients. In May 1988, Peng Taiping was awarded the National "May 1st Labor Medal," "National Advanced Worker in Health Civilization Construction," and "Shenzhen Model Worker" titles.
