History

The Shea Theater was established in February 1927 by Denis Shea and opened on Valentine's Day 1927 in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. It was designed in the Spanish style popular in 1920s Hollywood, with California Stucco walls, wooden ceiling beams, a lobby lantern imported from Madrid, and Spanish-style wrought iron fixtures. The opening program included an overture by the Shea Theater Orchestra, Pathe News, an Our Gang comedy, variety entertainers, and the feature film "Love's Great Mistake" starring William Powell and Evelyn Brent. In the 1930s, the theater offered five-cent matinees, movie serials, and dish nights. The stage also hosted amateur theater productions. The theater has undergone renovations and now operates as the Shea Theater Arts Center, a publicly owned non-profit performing arts center with 330 seats, serving as an economic engine for the town's revitalization.
