Overview
The Shaw Group Ltd. is one of Eastern Canada's leading manufacturers and community developers, with roots dating to 1861 when Robert Shaw established a brickyard in Hantsport, Nova Scotia. The company evolved into L.E. Shaw Limited and eventually The Shaw Group, and today remains a fourth-generation family business. It operates twelve distinct business divisions across the Maritime provinces, employs over 600 people, and produces nearly 1,000 unique products. Its traditional market area of Atlantic Canada has expanded to include all of North America, and it has exported to Japan, China, Sweden, and Germany. The group's operations span natural resource manufacturing, community development, and residential building. Its Shaw Brick division, founded in 1861, manufactures, distributes, and retails clay brick, concrete block, and natural stone products for the landscaping and building sectors. Clayton Developments Limited, a division since 1959, is Atlantic Canada's premier community developer, having created communities for more than 70,000 residents. Shaw Precast Solutions, operating since 1945, produces concrete pipes and manholes. The company also operates five retail Shaw Centres and a network of more than 300 dealers, and its master-planned communities are home to over 80,000 residents. The Shaw Group is known for reliable Canadian-made products, strong and loyal leadership, and a commitment to continuous innovation. Its core values include safety, integrity, and community service. The company has a long history of resilience, having survived the Great Depression and the Halifax Explosion, and it continues to adapt and grow while staying true to its Maritime roots.
History
The Shaw Group's history began in 1861 when Robert Shaw established a brickyard in Hantsport, Nova Scotia—six years before Canadian Confederation. For almost 40 years, all bricks were made by hand. In 1897, a fire destroyed Windsor, Nova Scotia, creating demand for hundreds of thousands of bricks to rebuild the town; this prompted the company to purchase its first brick-making machinery. The Halifax Explosion of 1917 similarly created great demand for building materials to rebuild Halifax. Four years later, in 1921, the company became known as L.E. Shaw Limited, with plants in Shubenacadie, Lantz, Avonport, and Chipman, New Brunswick. During the Great Depression, the company struggled, and by 1934 all plants had suspended production. It slowly recovered and by the Second World War was the only brick manufacturer remaining in the Maritimes. Over the following decades, the company diversified. Clayton Developments Limited, founded in 1959, became Atlantic Canada's premier community developer and a division of The Shaw Group. Shaw Precast Solutions began operations in 1945. The company grew into twelve distinct business divisions across the Maritime provinces, employing over 600 people and producing nearly 1,000 unique products. It remains a fourth-generation family business, with five retail Shaw Centres and a network of more than 300 dealers. Its master-planned communities are home to over 80,000 residents.
