Overview
Shape Data Limited was a British computer software company founded in Cambridge in 1974 by doctoral students associated with the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. The company specialized in software for engineering, manufacturing, computer graphics, and computer-aided design (CAD). Although it ceased operating as an independent company in 1991, its technical legacy survives through Parasolid and the Cambridge-based engineering-software activities that ultimately became part of Siemens Digital Industries Software. The company grew out of research conducted at Cambridge on computational geometry, computer graphics, and computer-aided design. In 1965, Professor Maurice Wilkes and doctoral student Charles Lang established a Computer Aided Design Group at the Computer Laboratory. The group explored software and mathematical techniques for representing mechanical objects and supporting CAD/CAM systems. Ian Braid's doctoral research on computational geometry became particularly important to Shape Data's commercial work. Shape Data initially earned revenue through business-to-business consulting. In 1975, the General Electric Company commissioned the company to develop a solid modeller based on Braid's research. After approximately three years of development, Shape Data released Romulus in 1978. It was the first commercially licensed solid geometric modelling kernel and was a major step beyond wireframe and surface-based approaches to computer modelling. Solid modelling allowed engineering software to represent three-dimensional objects more completely and to automate calculations used in design simulation, planning, and verification. The company entered a period of rapid growth after Evans & Sutherland Computer Corporation began marketing Romulus in the United States in 1980 and acquired Shape Data in 1981. Additional capital enabled the Cambridge operation to expand its staff and computing resources. Employment grew from 17 people in 1981 to approximately 40 in 1983 and about 70 by 1986. Shape Data also became an important source of technical expertise for Cambridge's emerging engineering-software community; former employees later helped establish other solid-modelling businesses. Shape Data developed Romulus-D as a successor and extension to its earlier technology. The product attracted industrial interest, including a major commitment from Caterpillar in 1988. During the same period, Siemens agreed to acquire the Parasolid product and development group from the company's parent. The transaction created uncertainty over the relationship between Parasolid and Romulus-D, since Parasolid was the geometric-modelling kernel underlying the newer program. Caterpillar responded by helping finance Shape Data in an effort to prevent the transfer of Parasolid rights. On 31 October 1988, Shape Data was sold to McDonnell Douglas Information Systems Limited. In 1989, it released Parasolid, a new solid-modelling kernel developed over several years and positioned as a replacement for Romulus. Parasolid became the most enduring product associated with Shape Data and remains widely used as a geometric kernel in engineering and manufacturing software. In 1991, McDonnell Douglas Systems Integration businesses, including Shape Data, were acquired by EDS, then associated with General Motors. The acquired operations were branded EDS Unigraphics and later formed part of Unigraphics Solutions. Unigraphics Solutions was acquired by Siemens AG in 2007, bringing the Shape Data-descended Parasolid activities into Siemens Digital Industries Software. The Shape Data corporate name itself remained with McDonnell Douglas Information Systems for a time and was later used in connection with businesses marketing Glovia enterprise resource-planning software before the company name changed to Glova International Limited. History
Shape Data was established in Cambridge in 1974 by Charles Lang, Ian Braid, Alan Grayer, and Peter Veenman, all doctoral students associated with the University of Cambridge. Its intellectual origins lay in the Cambridge Computer Laboratory's Computer Aided Design Group, founded in 1965 by Maurice Wilkes and Charles Lang. The group worked on computational geometry, computer graphics, and software systems for mechanical CAD/CAM. Veenman became the company's sole employee at the time of incorporation, while Lang, Braid, and Grayer initially continued their academic work. Shape Data's first commercial activity consisted largely of consulting and contract development. In 1975, General Electric commissioned the company to create a solid modeller based on Ian Braid's doctoral research. The resulting product, Romulus, was released in 1978 after roughly three years of development. It was the first commercially licensed solid geometric modelling kernel and helped move industrial CAD beyond wireframe and surface representations. Shape Data entered the United States market through a 1979 distribution agreement with Evans and Sutherland of Salt Lake City. Evans and Sutherland later acquired the company in 1981, providing additional funding for staff, equipment, and product development. The company also influenced the wider Cambridge technology ecosystem, with former employees helping form other solid-modelling businesses. The next major development was Romulus-D. By 1988, Shape Data was under pressure from competing acquisition interests and internal fragmentation. Siemens agreed to purchase the Parasolid product and development group from the parent company, while the Romulus-D group and administrative personnel were not included. Caterpillar, which had committed to Romulus-D as a major customer, became concerned that the rights to Parasolid—the geometric kernel used by Romulus-D—would move to Siemens. Caterpillar subsequently helped finance Shape Data in an attempt to prevent that transfer. Shape Data was sold to McDonnell Douglas Information Systems Limited on 31 October 1988, with Ron Belcher appointed to lead the company. In 1989, Shape Data released Parasolid after several years of development. The software replaced Romulus and became a significant commercial kernel for three-dimensional solid modelling. In 1991, EDS acquired the McDonnell Douglas Systems Integration groups, including Shape Data. The operations were marketed as EDS Unigraphics and later became part of Unigraphics Solutions, which EDS established as a wholly owned subsidiary in 1997. Siemens AG acquired Unigraphics Solutions in 2007. The former Shape Data products and teams consequently became part of Siemens Digital Industries Software, while the original Shape Data company ceased operating as an independent entity in 1991. The Shape Data name was subsequently associated for a period with businesses marketing Glovia enterprise-resource-planning software, before a later corporate name change to Glova International Limited.
