Overview

SEVER – The Rýchory Centre of Environmental Education and Ethics (Czech: Středisko ekologické výchovy a etiky Rýchory – SEVER) is a Czech non-profit organisation dedicated to environmental education, ecological ethics and education for sustainable development. It is based in Horní Maršov, a village in the Rýchory hills on the Czech side of the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), close to the Polish border. The centre takes its name from the Rýchory ridge, the easternmost spur of the Krkonoše range, where its original facilities were established. The organisation was founded in the early 1990s, in the period immediately after the Velvet Revolution when Czech civil society was rebuilding and environmental movements were gaining public attention. SEVER grew out of the Czech environmental-education movement and became one of the country's longest-running centres of its kind. Its work combines residential environmental-education programmes for schools, teacher training, methodological support for educators, and public-awareness activities on sustainability and ecological ethics. SEVER operates as a non-governmental, non-profit body. It runs residential courses and field programmes for Czech and international school groups, offers seminars and workshops for teachers and other educators, and participates in national and European projects on environmental education and education for sustainable development. Its facilities in Horní Maršov include accommodation and teaching spaces that allow multi-day stays in a mountain environment, which is central to its pedagogical approach: direct experience of nature is used as a basis for reflection on human–environment relationships and ethical responsibility. The centre collaborates with Czech schools, universities, state environmental bodies, municipalities and non-profit networks, and it has taken part in international partnerships and exchange projects. Its long institutional history, its location in a protected mountain landscape, and its focus on the ethical dimension of environmental education distinguish it within the Czech environmental-education field. The organisation remains active and continues to provide programmes from its Horní Maršov base.

History

SEVER – The Rýchory Centre of Environmental Education and Ethics emerged in the early 1990s, in the period of rapid social and institutional change that followed the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia. Environmental issues had been an important part of the dissident and civic movements of the late 1980s, and after 1989 a wave of new environmental organisations was founded across the country. SEVER was established as a centre for environmental education and ethics, with its base in the Rýchory area near Horní Maršov in the Krkonoše mountains. The choice of location was significant. The Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) form the highest range in the Czech Republic and include a national park with valuable subalpine and alpine ecosystems. Basing an environmental-education centre in this landscape allowed programmes to combine classroom teaching with direct field experience in a protected mountain environment. The name 'Rýchory' refers to the ridge on which the centre's original facilities were located. From the 1990s onwards, SEVER developed a model of residential environmental education in which school classes stay for several days and take part in a structured programme of field activities, ecological investigations and reflective sessions on environmental ethics. This model was relatively new in the Czech context and helped to shape national practice in environmental education. The centre also became involved in training teachers and other educators, producing methodological materials and offering seminars that spread environmental-education methods to schools across the country. Over the following decades, SEVER participated in a range of Czech and international projects, often in partnership with schools, universities, state environmental institutions, municipalities and other non-profit organisations. Its work aligned with the broader European movement for education for sustainable development, which gained momentum through the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005–2014) and subsequent frameworks. SEVER's emphasis on ecological ethics gave its programmes a distinctive philosophical dimension, encouraging participants to reflect not only on environmental knowledge and skills but also on values and responsibility towards nature and future generations. The organisation has remained active into the present, operating from its base in Horní Maršov and continuing to provide residential courses, teacher training and public programmes. Its long institutional continuity makes it one of the most established environmental-education centres in the Czech Republic.
