Overview

Sesam på lätt svenska (later renamed Sesam öppnar dörrar) was a Swedish weekly newspaper written in easy Swedish. It was commonly called simply Sesam. The paper was aimed primarily at adults learning Swedish, for example in SFI (Swedish for Immigrants) courses. Its origin traces back to Invandrartidningen, a weekly published by the state foundation Stiftelsen Invandrartidningen until 1998, which appeared in seven languages plus easy Swedish. When the government split the immigration authority into Migrationsverket and Integrationsverket, it decided it could no longer afford to publish Invandrartidningen. The editor-in-chief Jolin Boldt bought the publishing rights and renamed the paper Nyhetstidningen Sesam. That paper cared about an immigrant and minority perspective and was written in easy Swedish. Nyhetstidningen Sesam was published for four years; in 2002 Boldt filed for bankruptcy. The publishing certificate was bought by the media cooperative Stockholms Fria Tidning, later Fria Tidningar, which changed the name to Sesam på lätt svenska. In 2012 Fria Tidningar renamed the paper Sesam öppnar dörrar. In July 2016 Sesam and all of Fria's newspapers, previously owned by the media cooperative Stockholms Fria Tidning, were acquired by ETC. ETC Fria AB was formed. The CEO of ETC Fria AB is Caspar Behrendt. Sesam was shut down in the autumn of 2017.
