Overview

Serüven is a Turkish periodical brand: a quarterly journal devoted to comics research (çizgi roman araştırmaları). It began publication in March 2004 and is issued every three months. Its editor-in-chief is Levent Cantek. The journal publishes academic and semi-academic research articles on comics alongside popular introductory and review writing, with the stated aim of creating a popular-culture literature for comics in Turkey. The journal is produced on a collective, non-commercial basis: contributors are not paid, and the roster is open to anyone. Its participant writers and artists include professionals as well as collectors, amateur artists and ordinary readers. Among the frequently contributing names listed are Levent Cantek, Orhan Berent, Şenol Bezci, Tanyel Ali Mutlu, Funda Şenol, Can Yalçınkaya, Kosta Ceran, Linda Stark, Esin Bayraktar, Oğuz Eren, Batuhan Cantürk, Simge Kırcan, Aziz Tuna, Aykut Erdem, Erkut Erdem, Bülent Tellan, Serdar Kökçeoğlu and Fehmi Ardalı. Each issue is accompanied by supplements: a booklet containing a publication list (yayın listesi) prepared for a comics work published in Turkey, and a postcard reproducing the issue cover made by a local artist. This makes the journal both a research outlet and a collector-oriented object. The first six issues were published by Oğlak Yayınları under its Maceraperest line, appearing between March 2004 and June 2005. From the seventh issue onward the journal was published by its own means, under the Yörünge Akademi publishing label, and the title was carried as Yeni Serüven (New Serüven), with issues numbered both in the new series and in continuation of the old one: Yeni Serüven 01 (7) in March 2006, 02 (8) in June 2006, 03 (9) in October 2006 and 04 (10) in January 2007. The journal maintains an official website at seruven.org.
