Overview

Senmeisha (株式会社千明社) was a Japanese printing company that primarily produced catalogs, posters, and flyers for mail-order and direct-marketing businesses. It was part of the Daio Paper Group and operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of Daio Printing (later renamed Daio Miura). The company was founded in July 1950 in Kanda-Ogawamachi, Chiyoda, Tokyo, and was incorporated on June 24, 1955. It began with letterpress printing and later adopted offset printing, becoming an early adopter of color computer prepress with its "Total Scanner" system. In 1988, it completed the Satte Factory in Satte, Saitama, internalizing planning, design, printing, and processing. The company faced financial difficulties due to digitalization and rising costs, selling its image processing center in 2015 and its headquarters building in 2018. On November 13, 2019, it filed for civil rehabilitation proceedings with the Tokyo District Court, with liabilities of 3.01 billion yen. On January 7, 2020, its business was transferred to a new company also named Senmeisha, established by Daio Paper, and the old company was renamed SMS Co., Ltd., which was dissolved on March 31, 2021. The new Senmeisha continued operations under the Daio Paper Group, relocating its headquarters to Sumida, Tokyo, in 2020. On April 1, 2022, it was absorbed into Daio Printing, which was renamed Daio Miura, and Senmeisha ceased to exist as a separate entity.

History

Senmeisha was established in July 1950 in Kanda-Ogawamachi, Chiyoda, Tokyo, and was incorporated on June 24, 1955. It started as a letterpress printer but soon adapted to offset printing and introduced the "Total Scanner" color computer prepress system. In May 1963, it opened the Oji Division in Kita, Tokyo. In May 1983, it established an image processing center, and in April 1988, it completed the Satte Factory in Satte, Saitama, internalizing prepress processes such as planning, design, printing, and processing. In November 1990, the headquarters moved to Kita, Tokyo, and in April 1997, a new Satte Factory was completed. From the May 2012 fiscal year, sales remained flat, and the company could not escape deficits due to digitalization and rising costs. It sold its image processing center in 2015 and its headquarters building in May 2018, moving its headquarters to Kudankita, Chiyoda, Tokyo. On November 13, 2019, it filed for civil rehabilitation with the Tokyo District Court, with liabilities of 3.01 billion yen. On December 12, 2019, it signed a civil rehabilitation sponsor agreement with Daio Paper. On January 7, 2020, its business was transferred to a new company, Senmeisha (Shinsha), established by Daio Paper on December 5, 2019, and the old company was renamed SMS Co., Ltd. The new company began operations on January 7, 2020, initially headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, but moved to Sumida, Tokyo, in May 2020 to share offices with its parent Daio Printing. Its registered head office moved from Satte, Saitama, to Sumida, Tokyo, in October 2020. The old SMS Co., Ltd. continued civil rehabilitation proceedings and was dissolved on March 31, 2021. On April 1, 2022, the new Senmeisha was absorbed into Daio Printing, which was renamed Daio Miura, ending Senmeisha's existence as a separate entity.
