Overview
Senko is the core logistics operating company of the Senko Group, which operates diverse businesses including logistics, trading, business support and life support. Centered on a nationwide network of motor freight transport, Senko also operates warehousing, rail-use transport, in-factory logistics, marine transport and international logistics. Its origins trace to the 1916 founding of Tomita Shokai, and the company says it has continued transformation and challenge for over 100 years.
History
Senko's origins trace to 1916, when Tomita Shokai was founded as the dedicated logistics company of the Nichitsu zaibatsu, a major chemical manufacturer, performing in-factory logistics at a plant in Kumamoto Prefecture. In 1941 Tomita Shokai became Nichitsu Transport, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nichitsu zaibatsu responsible for its logistics division. In 1946, following Japan's defeat in the Pacific War, the zaibatsu dissolution order led to Nichitsu Transport's dissolution; that same year, volunteers established Ogi Koshi Transport, whose name expressed the aspiration to revive the fan symbol of the Nichitsu zaibatsu. In 1950 the company handled transport of recovery materials and coal as an energy source, and materials for hydroelectric power stations built across Kyushu, and acquired its first company-owned ship, the Keizan Maru. In 1954 it began route truck operations between Osaka and Nagoya and proceeded to organize a nationwide network. In 1959 it obtained warehousing business authorization and expanded warehouse bases starting in Osaka. In 1965 it introduced computers ahead of other companies, advancing online links with customers for warehouse inventory management and freight calculation. In 1970 it began logistics consulting, and in 1973 began training logistics system engineers. Also in 1973 it introduced CI, dropping 'Transport' from its name and adopting the katakana name Senko. In 1978 it entered the moving business in earnest. In 1983 it began nationwide rollout of PD centers with combined functions covering storage, delivery, distribution processing and logistics information processing. In 1984 it entered the air cargo transport business, and in 1985 it took on logistics operations for home center customers. In 1990 it listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
