History

Sena Wangi was established on 12 August 1975 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The idea for the organization emerged around the time of the second Pekan Wayang Indonesia (Indonesian Wayang Week) in 1974, when the organizing committee met with the President of Indonesia. The President suggested forming a "joint secretariat" to accommodate all organizations, foundations, and institutions dealing with wayang in Indonesia. Respecting the principles of democracy and consensus, wayang enthusiasts in Jakarta consulted with wayang figures and authorities, then held the First National Congress of Indonesian Wayang in 1975 at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta. The congress, held on 11–12 August 1975, unanimously agreed to establish a national organization as suggested by the President. The congress assigned a Formative Council consisting of three people to prepare the organization. Sena Wangi has since served as the national secretariat for wayang and puppetry arts, with members including wayang and puppetry organizations, wayang schools, cultural observers, artists, and community leaders. It focuses on preserving and developing wayang, which UNESCO recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The organization has been involved in major events such as the National Wayang Day (Hari Wayang Nasional) and the Living ICH Forum. In 2024, the 6th National Wayang Day and 4th Living ICH Forum were held, opened by the Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon. The management for the 2022–2027 period is led by Chairman FH Bambang Soelistyo.
