Semper Zwei

Semper Zwei is a performance venue operated by the Semperoper Dresden, located directly behind the historic Semperoper building in Dresden, Germany. It functions as an experimental stage for a variety of music-theatre formats, with a particular emphasis on opera for children and young people, modern chamber operas, and world and first performances by contemporary composers. The venue provides an intimate, modern setting that complements the grand main stage of the Semperoper. Beyond contemporary and youth-oriented opera, Semper Zwei hosts several recurring series such as "Semper Bar," "Fenster aus Jazz" (Window of Jazz), and "SemperDialog," which invite audiences to experience opera and vocal performance in direct, close-up ways. The venue also serves as a home for the Semperoper's music and theatre education programmes, providing a base for the Education team's youth work. Overall, Semper Zwei presents itself as a lively, open theatre building that offers something for people of all ages, creating space for exchange, discourse, learning, watching, wonder and participation. The venue is accessible directly behind the Semperoper, reachable from Theaterplatz via a staircase and from Bernhard-von-Lindenau-Platz at ground level. It shares the same travel and parking options as the Semperoper. For barrier-free access, Semper Zwei has a disabled parking space near the entrance and a ground-level entrance, though these are only accessible from Bernhard-von-Lindenau-Platz; from Theaterplatz there is a staircase. The ground floor houses the evening box office and cloakroom, while the theatre space on the first floor is reached via a staircase or lift. As part of the Semperoper Dresden, Semper Zwei is a state-owned cultural institution. It does not operate as a commercial brand in the traditional sense but functions as a distinct venue brand within the Semperoper's portfolio, catering to niche and experimental programming.

Semper Zwei is a relatively recent addition to the Semperoper Dresden's venue portfolio, established to provide a flexible space for experimental and contemporary music theatre. While the exact founding date is not documented in the available sources, its creation reflects a broader trend among major opera houses to develop smaller, alternative stages for innovative work and community engagement. The venue is located directly behind the historic Semperoper building, making use of a space that allows for intimate performances and educational activities. Since its inception, Semper Zwei has hosted a diverse programme that includes operas for children and young people, modern chamber operas, and world and first performances by contemporary composers. It has also become a hub for the Semperoper's education team, hosting music and theatre pedagogy projects and youth work. The venue's series such as "Semper Bar," "Fenster aus Jazz," and "SemperDialog" have established it as a place for direct audience engagement and discourse. The venue's design and accessibility features, including a ground-level entrance from Bernhard-von-Lindenau-Platz and a disabled parking space, demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity. The theatre space on the first floor, along with the ground-floor box office and cloakroom, supports a range of events. As part of the state-owned Semperoper Dresden, Semper Zwei operates within the public cultural framework of Saxony, Germany.
