Overview

SELEX Sistemi Integrati S.p.A. was an Italian aerospace, defense, and security electronics company headquartered in Rome. It operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of Finmeccanica and served as one of the group’s principal system-integration businesses before its incorporation into Selex ES in 2013. The company designed, developed, manufactured, and supported integrated systems rather than concentrating solely on individual electronic components. Its portfolio covered radar and sensor technologies, command and control, air-defense and battlefield-management architectures, naval combat systems, homeland security, maritime and coastal surveillance, air-traffic management, and turnkey airport solutions. The company’s industrial heritage reached back to the development of Italian radar and professional electronics. In 1951, Finmeccanica and Raytheon established Microlambda near Naples to produce radar equipment under license for land and naval applications. A further professional-electronics company, SINDEL, was created in 1956. In 1960, Finmeccanica, Raytheon, and Edison formed Selenia, a joint venture dedicated to civil and military surveillance systems. Selenia later became part of the corporate lineage that passed through the merger of Selenia and Aeritalia into Alenia in 1990, followed by the separation of Alenia’s aerospace and defense activities in the late 1990s. The immediate corporate predecessor of SELEX Sistemi Integrati was Alenia Marconi Systems, an alliance established in 1998 between Finmeccanica and GEC-Marconi. After Marconi’s combination with British Aerospace created BAE Systems, Finmeccanica acquired BAE Systems’ interests in the Italian operations of Alenia Marconi Systems in 2005. The transaction also brought related United Kingdom and United States air-traffic-management and air-traffic-control activities into the Finmeccanica group, after which SELEX Sistemi Integrati was established as a wholly owned subsidiary. SELEX Sistemi Integrati organized its activities into three broad areas. Large Systems addressed homeland protection, critical infrastructure, border and territorial security, crisis management, major-event protection, and networked defense architectures. Civil Systems supplied air-traffic-management technologies, turnkey airport systems, and vessel-traffic and maritime-surveillance solutions. Defense Systems covered integrated naval combat systems, command and control, fire control, radar and electro-optical sensors, mission planning, logistics information, simulation, training, testing, and validation. A notable capability was the RAT31DL family of three-dimensional long-range radars, including fixed and deployable configurations known as FADR and DADR. The company was described as a major European supplier of such systems in the NATO area. Its industrial footprint included sites in Rome, Fusaro and Giugliano near Naples, Nerviano near Milan, Genoa, La Spezia, and Taranto, together with operations in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States. The company reportedly had approximately 4,500 employees during its operating period. On 1 July 2010, defense, logistics, and environment activities from Elsag Datamat were transferred to SELEX Sistemi Integrati. The transfer also included Space Software Italia and activities related to precision-approach radar systems. On 1 January 2013, SELEX Sistemi Integrati merged with sister companies SELEX Galileo and SELEX Elsag to create Selex ES. The SELEX Sistemi Integrati corporate entity therefore ceased to operate independently, although its technologies, personnel, sites, and programs continued within the successor organization.

History

SELEX Sistemi Integrati developed from the Italian radar and professional-electronics industry associated with Finmeccanica. Its early industrial lineage included Microlambda, created in 1951 by Finmeccanica and Raytheon near Naples to produce radar systems under license for land and naval use. In 1956, the creation of SINDEL expanded the professional-electronics base, while the 1960 establishment of Selenia by Finmeccanica, Raytheon, and Edison created a larger platform for civil and military surveillance technologies. Selenia merged with Aeritalia in 1990 to form Alenia, a broad aerospace and defense group whose activities included aircraft, space systems, radars, naval equipment, missiles, avionics, engines, and environmental-protection systems. During the late 1990s, Alenia was divided into more focused businesses. Alenia Aerospazio concentrated on aircraft and space systems, while Alenia Difesa covered radars, missiles, naval systems, avionics, and related defense equipment. Seeking an international structure for its defense activities, Alenia Difesa entered into an alliance with GEC-Marconi in the late 1990s. Alenia Marconi Systems was established in 1998 with equal ownership by Finmeccanica and GEC-Marconi. The subsequent merger of Marconi with British Aerospace created BAE Systems. In 2005, Finmeccanica acquired BAE Systems’ interests in the Italian Alenia Marconi Systems operations, as well as associated British air-traffic-management and air-traffic-control activities and the former ASI operations in the United States. SELEX Sistemi Integrati was then established as a wholly owned Finmeccanica subsidiary. The business operated across three principal areas. Large Systems covered homeland security, critical infrastructure, territorial and border protection, major-event security, crisis management, and networked defense systems. Civil Systems addressed air-traffic management, airport integration, coastal surveillance, maritime monitoring, and vessel-traffic management. Defense Systems supplied integrated combat and mission systems for land, naval, and air applications, including command and control, combat management, fire control, radar, electro-optical sensing, mission planning, logistics support, simulation, training, and system validation. Its sites in Italy included Rome, Fusaro, Giugliano, Nerviano, Genoa, La Spezia, and Taranto. International operations were maintained in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States, with activities spanning defense and security, weather radar, and air-navigation aids. The RAT31DL fixed and deployable three-dimensional long-range radar family represented one of the company’s best-known defense capabilities and supported its position as a significant European radar supplier in NATO markets. The company also preserved the history of Italian radar engineering through the Radar Museum, opened at Fusaro on 2 April 2009. In 2010, Finmeccanica transferred selected Elsag Datamat activities into SELEX Sistemi Integrati, including defense, logistics, environmental, space-software, and precision-approach-radar work. The final corporate transition came on 1 January 2013, when SELEX Sistemi Integrati merged with SELEX Galileo and SELEX Elsag to form Selex ES. Its independent brand and corporate structure consequently ended, while its capabilities became part of the successor business.
