History
The Seismology Research Centre (SRC) was founded in 1976 in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. It started at Preston Institute of Technology, which was renamed Phillip Institute of Technology and later merged with RMIT University. It was part of RMIT University until 1998, when it was acquired by private industry; RMIT sold the SRC group to a private company, Mindata Australia, which was in turn acquired by ESS Earth Sciences (formerly ES&S). The SRC has been operating seismographs in southeast Australia since 1976, and its current network includes over 100 permanent sites throughout Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. The SRC operates the largest private earthquake observatory network in the world and the greatest number of earthquake seismograph stations in Australia. Its observatory is located in Richmond, an inner city suburb of Melbourne VIC, with an operations base in Brisbane QLD. The SRC has been involved in a landmark earth science project in Western Australia as a supplier of some of the seismographs used in the project and in assisting with one phase of the deployment of over 150 seismic stations. It is the SRC's 50th anniversary.
