History

Seishinsha was founded in 1953 by Shin Kobayashi, who left his career as a mathematics teacher to establish the company in Omagari (present-day Koraku, Bunkyo, Tokyo). The company's first publication was a mathematics problem book for junior high schools. In its early days, with only two employees, the company visited schools almost daily to gather feedback from teachers and improve its materials. In 1958, the headquarters moved to Kojimachi (Yonbancho, Chiyoda). Around 1965, the company began distributing sample copies to junior high schools through agencies. In 1966, the headquarters moved to Sekiguchi (present-day Sekiguchi 1-14-12, Bunkyo). In 1967, a high school division was established, but around 1968 the company faced difficult times due to a reduction in entrance exam subjects. In 1970, the high school division became independent as "Seikosha." In 1979, the current headquarters building was completed at Sekiguchi 1-17-8, Bunkyo. By this time, the company had expanded from being known primarily as "Seishinsha of mathematics" to publishing materials for all subjects in junior high schools. In 1980, Hayami Ito became president. In 1993, Shinji Kobayashi became president. In 1999, the elementary school division was established. In 2003, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary and established a new logistics center. In 2022, Hajime Kanai became president. Today, Seishinsha publishes a wide range of supplementary materials for elementary and junior high schools, as well as for cram schools, and offers academic ability diagnostic tests and mock exams. It has also expanded into digital materials, including browser apps, Google Forms/Excel integrations, videos, and e-books. The company engages in educational contributions such as teacher workshops, special needs support, and donating materials to developing countries.
