Overview
SEISEKI SAKURA GATE (せいせきさくらゲート) is the newest annex of the Keio Seiseki Sakuragaoka Shopping Center (京王聖蹟桜ヶ丘ショッピングセンター), a station-front shopping complex directly connected to Seiseki Sakuragaoka Station on the Keio Line in Sekido, Tama City, Tokyo. The overall center is operated by Keio SC Creation and anchored by Keio Department Store, with a tenant mix dominated by Keio Group businesses. The complex sits adjacent to the Keio Electric Railway head office building. The main shopping center opened in 1969 alongside the elevation of Seiseki Sakuragaoka Station, initially built around Keio Store and the Keio Crown Street under the elevated tracks. After a station-area redevelopment program that began in 1984, the current A and B buildings were completed and opened on March 28, 1986. A C building was added later, and the three-building configuration remains today: A building houses Keio Store and Keio Artman, B building contains Keio Department Store and a fashion specialty street, and C building is a restaurant floor. SEISEKI SAKURA GATE opened on March 26, 2009 as a new annex built on the former site of a Keio Automobile sales office. The five-story building hosts five beauty- and health-themed tenants on floors one through three, while floors four and five contain offices of Keio Group companies including the Keio Automobile head office. It is located about a five-minute walk from Seiseki Sakuragaoka Station along the Kawasaki Highway. The wider center has undergone repeated renewals, including barrier-free restroom upgrades, food-waste recycling, a solar power system, and floor-by-floor renovations of the fashion specialty street and restaurant floors. The official website presents the center under the brand name "せいせき" and lists buildings A, B, C, Crown Street, the elevated-track area, Sakura Gate, Keio Department Store, Keio Store, Keio Artman, and Sakura Terrace Mall. The site also carries shop news, event notices, and Keio Point campaign information for the complex.
History
The Keio Seiseki Sakuragaoka Shopping Center traces its origins to May 1969, when Seiseki Sakuragaoka Station was elevated and a shopping center opened around Keio Store and the Keio Crown Street under the elevated tracks, roughly on the site of the present A building. That early facility included restaurants and a bowling alley, though the bowling alley closed in 1974. Because the station was close to Tama New Town and had available land around it, a station-area redevelopment project began in February 1984. In March 1986 the current A and B buildings were completed, and the new Keio Seiseki Sakuragaoka Shopping Center opened on March 28, 1986. The redevelopment was completed in March 1988 when Keio Electric Railway moved its head office from Shinjuku Sanchome to the site adjacent to the station. The center is made up of three buildings: A and B, which opened together in 1986, and C, which was added later. A building contains Keio Store and Keio Artman; B building contains Keio Department Store Seiseki Sakuragaoka and a fashion specialty store street; C building is a restaurant area. The Keio Line runs between A and B buildings, with a first-floor ticket gate between them. Because there is no basement, the department store food floor "Keio Food Arena" is on the first floor of B building, and a bus terminal is also on the first floor of B building near C building. Connecting bridges link A and B on the fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth floors, and a bridge links B and C on the second floor. Pedestrian decks connect the center to The Square across Seiseki U-Road and to Seiseki Sakuragaoka OPA across the Kawasaki Highway. A seven-floor cinema called Seiseki Cinemax once operated on the seventh floor of A building but closed on September 30, 2004; the space later became a Kumazawa Bookstore. On March 26, 2009, the annex Seiseki Sakura Gate opened on the former site of a Keio Automobile sales office. The five-story building has five beauty- and health-themed tenants on floors one through three, while floors four and five house Keio Group offices including the Keio Automobile head office. It is about a five-minute walk from Seiseki Sakuragaoka Station along the Kawasaki Highway. The electronics tenant on the sixth floor of A building was originally Sakuraya Seiseki Sakuragaoka, but after Sakuraya closed all stores and liquidated in 2010, Bic Camera took over the location. Sakuraya closed in February 2010, and Bic Camera Seiseki Sakuragaoka opened in March. That store later closed on August 16, 2023, and the location was taken over by Kojima, a Bic Camera subsidiary, reopening on September 1, 2023 as Kojima x Bic Camera Seiseki Sakuragaoka. For many years the upper floors of C building housed the head office of Pacific Consultants, which relocated in September 2015; the space was then occupied by a NAS sports club. The center has pursued environmental and accessibility improvements. In November 2005 it completed an upgrade of the A building waste processing facility and began food-waste recycling across the complex. On December 26, 2006 it introduced a solar power generation system. From 2002 to 2007 all restrooms in A and B buildings were renovated for barrier-free access. These universal-design restroom improvements earned a letter of appreciation from the Governor of Tokyo on December 21, 2004, and the Cabinet Office Minister of State Award at the 2006 Barrier-Free Promotion Merit Awards on December 7, 2006. At the renewal opening on December 2, 2010, a "power-generating floor" corner was installed in the fifth-floor passage of B building. On June 6, 2013 the B building fashion specialty store street was renewed and grand-opened. On November 26, 2014 the eighth-floor restaurant street "Seiseki Dining [Cuu!]" was renewed, and on December 5, 2014 the C building restaurant floor reopened as "Oka no Ue Kitchen." On April 1, 2017 a barbecue facility, "Dejikyu BBQ Terrace," opened on the roof of A building's eighth floor. On March 28, 2020 the B building specialty store street on floors 2–5 was renewed, with nine new food and beverage tenants including Starbucks Coffee and Lindt Chocolat Boutique on the second floor, 13 existing stores renewed, and seven relocated existing stores such as Fancl opening earlier on March 6. A 10-minute cut salon, 11cut, opened on the fourth floor, and Right-on opened on the fifth floor. The center has marked anniversaries with events and campaigns. On March 28, 2016 it celebrated its 30th anniversary with an SNS posting campaign called "Seiseki Biyori" on Twitter and Instagram. On March 28, 2021 it marked its 35th anniversary, and a commemorative event, "Mystery Solving: Seiseki 35th Anniversary Party and the Lost Fairy," was scheduled from March 20 to May 9, but was canceled on April 24, 2021 because the Tokyo state of emergency was declared on April 25 due to COVID-19. An Instagram posting campaign, "Tsunagaru Seiseki," ran from March 10 to May 9. On March 30, 2025, as part of the 100th anniversary of Seiseki Sakuragaoka Station, a "Seiseki NEXT00 Year Start Summit" was scheduled at Aura Hall on the sixth floor.
