Overview
Scout Base Andreis (Italian: Base Scout di Andreis »Ezio Migotto«; Slovene: Skavtski center Andreis) is a regional scout centre in the Friulian Dolomites, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of north-eastern Italy. It is operated by AGESCI (Associazione Guide e Scouts Cattolici Italiani), the Italian Catholic Guides and Scouts association, through its Friuli-Venezia Giulia regional branch. The centre is located near the village of Andreis, in the hamlet of Bosplans, at an elevation of 484 metres above sea level, between the Corta, Castello and Raut peaks and close to the boundary of the Parco Naturale Dolomiti Friulane (Friulian Dolomites Natural Park). The facility consists of a restored traditional farmhouse with auxiliary buildings and a camping area on approximately five hectares of land between the Spiçot river and the Alba stream. The house offers 24 beds and can accommodate up to 35 people, with a kitchen equipped for 50, three bathrooms, electricity and water connections, and a large hall accessible from the rear and adapted for people with mobility impairments. Heating is provided by three wood stoves and/or electric radiators. An adjacent former stable (stavolo) contains an additional bathroom with two WCs. A separate woodshed houses a workshop with tools for emergency repairs and a space for preparing firewood; photovoltaic panels on the roof supply electricity. A large wooden pavilion of 60 m², equipped with tables and seating for up to 200 people, is used for group activities, including in bad weather. The camping area includes a tent area, a designated fire area and a camp flagpole, as well as a large meadow for games and outdoor activities. The centre is primarily intended for scouts, for camp schools, leader training courses, summer camps, and scout schools of life in nature. Its location makes it suitable for various educational activities, camps and nature projects based on environmental education and work with young people, environmental days for school groups and secondary schools, sometimes in cooperation with the natural park, and activities aimed at discovering and experiencing nature. The local community of the Municipality of Andreis has come to see the scout centre as an example of positive practice in a demographically threatened area; for many years, in mid-May, a first-harvest festival (Prin Tài de fen) has been organised with various activities bringing together scouts, their families, friends and locals. The history of the centre is linked to the devastating earthquake that struck Friuli and surrounding regions on 6 May 1976. In the aftermath, the Swiss scout association L'Association Genevoise des Eclaireurs Suisse organised a collection for scouts in the affected area. At the same time, the AGESCI regional leadership for Friuli-Venezia Giulia proposed that the Swiss scouts help with post-earthquake reconstruction by purchasing land for a regional scout centre. After the initiative was confirmed, a search for a suitable location in Friuli began in 1978, until one was found near the hamlet of Bosplans near Andreis. The site had everything needed for scout activities—a stream, meadows, forest and a very dilapidated traditional farm building over 200 years old, the lower part of which had been uninhabited for almost 20 years. It lacked water, electricity and sewage connections, except for access. In 1985 the purchase contract was signed, and work began on the surroundings and the design for reconstruction. The renovated building was inaugurated on 16 September 1990. Today the centre continues to serve as a base for scouting and outdoor education in the Friulian Dolomites, welcoming scouts and school groups from Italy and abroad. It is a private facility owned and managed by AGESCI Friuli-Venezia Giulia, not a commercial enterprise, but it operates as a branded scout centre with its own identity and facilities.
History
The history of Scout Base Andreis begins with the devastating earthquake that struck Friuli and surrounding regions on 6 May 1976. The crisis mobilised solidarity from Italy and abroad. The Swiss scout association L'Association Genevoise des Eclaireurs Suisse organised a collection for scouts in the affected area. At the same time, the regional leadership of AGESCI for Friuli-Venezia Giulia proposed that the Swiss scouts contribute to post-earthquake reconstruction by purchasing land for a regional scout centre. After the initiative was confirmed, a search for a suitable location in Friuli began in 1978. The search continued until a site was found near the hamlet of Bosplans near Andreis. The location offered everything needed for scout activities: a stream, meadows, forest, and a very dilapidated traditional farm building over 200 years old, whose lower part had been uninhabited for almost 20 years. The site lacked water, electricity and sewage connections, except for access. In 1985 the purchase contract was signed, allowing work to begin on the surroundings and the preparation of the reconstruction project. The renovated building was inaugurated on 16 September 1990. Since then, the centre has been used for scout camps, training courses, environmental education and community events. In mid-May, the first-harvest festival (Prin Tài de fen) has been organised for many years, bringing together scouts, families, friends and locals. The centre is named after Ezio Migotto, as indicated by its full Italian name, Base Scout di Andreis »Ezio Migotto«.
