Overview

Sconto Möbel, also known simply as Sconto and historically styled SCONTO, is a discount-furniture retail brand. Its roots lie in Möbel Walther, which established a discount-furniture subsidiary under the Sconto name. The first SCONTO self-service furniture market opened in 1990 in Kleinostheim, Bavaria. The brand later became part of the Krieger Group following the acquisition of Möbel Walther by furniture entrepreneur Kurt Krieger, who also owned the Höffner group. Sconto is now used for discount-furniture stores and certain affiliated service or operating companies within that group, rather than representing an independent listed company.

History

Sconto Möbel began as a discount-furniture venture established by Möbel Walther. The first SCONTO-SB furniture market opened in 1990 in Kleinostheim, Bavaria. The chain then expanded to additional locations, including seven sites in eastern Germany, followed by Lübeck in 1997 and Weiterstadt in 1999. The expansion continued with three store openings in each of 2004, 2005 and 2006. In 2007 Sconto took over five locations from Möbel Tick. The development of the brand was shaped by changes at its parent company. After furniture entrepreneur Kurt Krieger acquired Möbel Walther AG, the parent and its discount subsidiary were progressively integrated into the Krieger Group. Möbel Walther increasingly concentrated on the Sconto discount chain after most of its stores operating under the Möbel Walther name had been transferred to Höffner. Effective with the 2015 financial year, Möbel Walther AG was merged into Krieger Handel SE. The Sconto Holding GmbH & Co. KG, formerly the chain’s management holding company, was later deleted from the commercial register. Sconto continued as a name for discount-furniture stores and some affiliated group entities. The brand expanded beyond Germany into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In 2019 it was reported to have 27 locations in Germany, eight in the Czech Republic and two in Slovakia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some German stores were closed. By the end of December 2022, Germany had 20 branches, in addition to administrative and warehousing sites. The cited account reports that in early 2023 Sconto operated eight stores in the Czech Republic and four in Slovakia. In early 2024, it reported 20 German branches, a central warehouse in Braschwitz and the company headquarters in Schönefeld. Sconto’s current German online shop presents a broad assortment spanning furniture and household categories. Examples include sofas, beds, mattresses, wardrobes, chairs, tables, bedroom and living-room furniture, lighting, textiles, garden furniture, tableware and decoration. The site also promotes selected configurable or made-to-measure services, including the Baldwin chair system and Maßwerk furniture, alongside product guidance and telephone advice.
