Overview

Scipher Medicine is a Waltham, Massachusetts-based medical technology company operating at the intersection of precision medicine and artificial intelligence. Founded in 2013 by Dr. Joseph Loscalzo and Dr. Laszlo Barabasi, the company is dedicated to transforming the treatment of immunological diseases by replacing trial-and-error prescribing with data-driven therapy selection. Its mission is to match each patient with their most effective therapy and to bring forward the day when every autoimmune disease patient reaches remission. The company has built a proprietary platform that combines the mapping of hundreds of thousands of protein interactions in human cells, one of the largest molecular data registries in autoimmune diseases, and unique AI algorithms. This platform powers solutions for therapy selection based on identified biomarkers, as well as for the development and commercialization of drug treatments. Scipher's flagship product, PrismRA, is a blood-based test that predicts response to anti-TNF therapies in rheumatoid arthritis. PrismRA launched commercially in 2020 and received Medicare coverage in 2023. Scipher Medicine has raised multiple rounds of financing, including Series A in 2018, Series B in 2019 (with United Health Group investing), Series C in 2021, and Series D in 2022. The company has also established collaborations with pharmaceutical partners such as Galapagos and Ionis, and in 2024 launched PRoBeNet, a new approach to discover treatment-response-predicting biomarkers for complex diseases. Scipher remains a private company headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts.

History

Scipher Medicine was founded in 2013 by Dr. Joseph Loscalzo and Dr. Laszlo Barabasi, who since 2003 had been mapping human disease biology. By 2015, their map covered 89% of all proteins in human cells, revealing underlying causes of some of the most difficult diseases. In 2018, Scipher closed Series A funding and completed an observational study for an anti-TNF response test in rheumatoid arthritis. In 2019, the company closed Series B funding, with United Health Group investing. In 2020, Scipher launched PrismRA commercially and signed a collaboration with Galapagos in inflammatory bowel disease. In 2021, Scipher closed Series C financing and expanded PrismRA to the TNF-exposed population. In 2022, the company closed Series D funding, published three new studies on the clinical utility of PrismRA, and Galapagos in-licensed novel drug targets. In 2023, PrismRA received Medicare coverage and Scipher signed a multi-target partnership with Ionis. In 2024, Scipher launched PRoBeNet, a new approach to discover treatment-response-predicting biomarkers for complex diseases.
