Overview

Schweizer Tierschutz STS describes itself as the umbrella organization of animal-welfare organizations across all language regions of Switzerland and in Liechtenstein, and as the largest and leading organization for animal welfare in Switzerland. It states that it has worked for the welfare of animals for over 160 years, using its expertise nationally at both professional and political levels, and that its 70 STS sections in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, with their animal shelters and rescue stations, ensure animal-welfare base work in all cantons and language regions. It says its activities are financed through donations.

History

According to the organization's history page, the national Swiss animal-welfare umbrella association was founded in 1861 under the name "Schweizerischer Centralverein zum Schutze der Thiere." In 1980 this outdated name was changed to Schweizer Tierschutz STS. The STS states it is thus the oldest nationally active animal-welfare organization in Switzerland. As early as 1893, the STS achieved through a popular initiative that mammals must be anesthetized before blood withdrawal. Between 1960 and 1980 it took vehement influence on the creation of federal animal-welfare legislation, which came into force in 1981 and for the first time worldwide banned battery keeping of chickens. Today the STS says it fights just as uncompromisingly for an animal-welfare law that corresponds to the high value of animal welfare in society and a contemporary human-animal relationship, one that guarantees all animals the right to species-appropriate keeping and gentle treatment.
