Three wine merchants from Aachen were close to concluding purchase negotiations, with three Fuder (casks) in the final selection, but could not agree on which was the best. The sister of the winemaker entered the cellar with a black house cat to bring the buyers a snack. When the estate owner wanted to insert the sampling hose into one of the three barrels again, the cat, which had been prowling in the cellar, sprang with angry hissing onto the barrel, arched its back, bristled its fur and struck with its paws at anyone who wanted to take a drop from the wine barrel. The merchants finally gave in to the black cat and bought, without further tasting, the wine that the cat so persistently defended.
