Overview

Schronisko PTTK Przehyba is a mountain tourist hostel (schronisko) operated by the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (PTTK) in the Beskid Sądecki range, within the Radziejowa chain. It sits at an elevation of 1,175 metres above sea level, near the summit of Przehyba, and is reachable by hiking trail or an asphalt road. The hostel is a classic Polish mountain refuge, offering dormitory-style and private rooms, campsites, and a kitchen serving traditional Polish breakfasts, lunches, and buffet snacks. According to its official website, it has 50 beds and welcomes around 2,547 tourists per month. The facility is known for its panoramic views of the Tatra and Gorce mountains and serves as a base for hikers exploring the region. The hostel's history dates back to early 20th-century efforts by the Nowy Sącz branch of the Tatra Society (later PTT, now PTTK) to build a shelter on Przehyba. After decades of planning, land negotiations, and construction delays, the hostel was eventually realised. Today it operates as a PTTK facility, continuing the organisation's tradition of mountain hospitality. The brand is synonymous with the hostel itself, a well-known stop on trails in the Beskid Sądecki.

History

The idea of building a mountain hostel on Przehyba (also spelled Prehyba) emerged in the early years of the "Beskid" Tourist Society in Nowy Sącz, which joined the Tatra Society in 1907 as its Nowy Sącz branch. On 3 July 1908, Kazimierz Sosnowski, then secretary of the branch, formally proposed the construction. The branch considered purchasing and moving an unfinished hostel from Polana Konieczna, but lacked funds. From 1910, it resolved to set aside 50 crowns annually for the project. By spring 1912, a location near a spring with a wide view was selected, and in June 1912 the first official site inspection took place. However, the purchase of the chosen plot south of the summit failed due to difficulties with the Szlachtowa commune. In 1913, Sosnowski advocated the hostel in the Tatra Society's journal, and in 1914 the branch postponed construction until tourism in the Beskid Sądecki grew. World War I interrupted further work. After the war, in 1919 the Tatra Society's board declared support for the future hostel. In 1923, Sosnowski presented a concept of a main trail with a network of hostels, again including Przehyba. Formal efforts began in 1927 at a meeting of the Nowy Sącz PTT branch and inter-branch commissions. A special construction committee was formed, and subsidies were promised by the State Office of Physical Education and Military Training (PUWFiPW). Preparatory work involved the Nowy Sącz, Tarnów, Bochnia, and later Kraków branches, with additional subsidies from Kielce (1930–1933), Szczawnica (1936), and Warsaw (1938). Initially, construction was to be completed by 1931. From 1930, intensive field searches for a suitable plot and lengthy negotiations with landowners took place. The Hala Prehyba south of the summit, owned by the Rusyn-inhabited Szlachtowa commune, was the best location, but the commune was unwilling to sell to a Polish tourist organisation. It refused to sell a one-morg plot, offering instead a lease for 600 złoty per year, which the branch deemed prohibitive. Attempts to buy adjacent forest land from Count Adam Stadnicki also failed due to his conflict with the branch. In 1931, other locations north of the summit on state land were considered, but no water source was found; drilling in 1931 and 1932 was unsuccessful. The branch even considered building on Obidza pass, but the PTT West Beskid Commission opposed moving the investment off the main trail. In August 1935, a site inspection with the Szlachtowa communal council again rejected the sale. The branch then broke off talks with the commune and focused on Count Stadnicki. In February 1936, negotiations seemed stalled, but in March 1936, thanks to Władysław Rzepecki, a newly elected board member, and Leon Kociołek, manager of the Stadnicki estates, an agreement was reached. Count Stadnicki agreed to sell a suitable plot, but it lacked water. When drilling in June struck a productive source, the way was finally open for construction. The hostel was eventually built and opened, becoming a key facility in the Beskid Sądecki. Today it operates as Schronisko PTTK Przehyba, part of the PTTK network, and continues to serve tourists with accommodation and regional cuisine.
