Overview

Schneider Schreibgeräte is a German manufacturer of writing instruments based in Tennenbronn in the Black Forest. The company was founded in September 1938 by Christian Schneider and Erwin Blum as 'Blum & Schneider OHG – Factory for Screws and Turned Parts', initially producing screws and turned parts rather than pens. It is an owner-managed family business that has kept almost all of its development and production activities in Germany, which the company says allows it to meet stringent German ecological and social standards as well as high product quality. Schneider's entry into writing instruments came through refills. After the ballpoint pen was invented in the USA in the same year the firm was founded, Schneider developed its own refill; the quality of the 'good Schneider refill' helped drive the breakthrough of the ballpoint pen, and by 1954 the company had become a leading manufacturer of ballpoint refills. The introduction of plastic technology in 1957 alongside traditional metal processing enabled Schneider to produce complete writing instruments, and ballpoint pens and desk ballpoint sets joined the range. The company's product portfolio today spans ballpoint pens, refills, fountain pens and ink pens, markers and other writing and creative instruments. Its best-known products include the K 15 ballpoint pen, launched in 1993 and described by the company as the 'Beetle' among ballpoints and still the most widely used pen of its kind in Germany, and the Slider series, including the Slider Rave ballpoint pen with Viscoglide® technology, a body made of 68% recycled plastic and a replaceable giant refill. Schneider also markets the Paint-It 320 acrylic marker for creative work on wood, metal, paper, cardboard and stone, and the Callis range. Schneider positions itself around the idea that 'each thought is worth writing down' and 'writing instruments for everyone'. Its stated principles include pioneering ballpoint refills in the German market, establishing the K 15 as the ballpoint pen for everyone, and developing Viscoglide® technology. The company also promotes refilling instead of throwing away, reflecting an environmental emphasis. Leadership passed within the founding family: after the death of founder Christian Schneider in 1978, his son Roland Schneider took over as sole manager with the aim of making Schneider a technology leader in the writing instrument industry. In 1991 Schneider signed the takeover agreement for the Heiko fountain pen factory and began producing ink pens and fountain pens under its own brand name the following year. The company continues to operate as a family business with a history of more than 85 years.

History

Schneider Schreibgeräte was founded in September 1938 by Christian Schneider and Erwin Blum in Tennenbronn in the Black Forest as 'Blum & Schneider OHG – Factory for Screws and Turned Parts'. The same year, the ballpoint pen was invented in the USA. In 1940 Blum left the company and sold his shares to Schneider's brother. After news of the ballpoint spread, the company decided to develop its own refill; the quality of the 'good Schneider refill' was central to the breakthrough of the ballpoint pen, and by 1954 it had made Schneider a leading manufacturer of ballpoint refills. From 1951 the company began selling refills under its own brand. The introduction of plastic technology alongside traditional metal processing in 1957 enabled Schneider to begin producing complete writing instruments, and ballpoint pens and desk ballpoint sets became part of the range. Following the death of founder Christian Schneider in 1978, his son Roland Schneider took over as sole manager, aiming to turn Schneider into a technology leader for the writing instrument industry. In June 1991 the takeover agreement for the Heiko fountain pen factory was signed, and only one year later Schneider commenced production of ink pens and fountain pens in a newly built production facility under its own brand name. In 1993 the K 15 ballpoint pen was launched; it displaced its competitors at the top of the German sales charts and remains the most widely used pen of its kind in Germany, as well as an export success. Schneider has continued to describe itself as an owner-managed family business with more than 85 years of history, keeping almost all development and production activities in Germany. Its innovations include Viscoglide® technology for smooth writing, used in the Slider series, and products such as the Slider Rave ballpoint pen with a body made of 68% recycled plastic and a replaceable giant refill, and the Paint-It 320 acrylic marker for creative work on many substrates.
