Overview

The Schneibsteinhaus is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) of the Deutscher Alpenverein (German Alpine Club), Sektion Berchtesgaden, situated at 1,670 metres above sea level in the Berchtesgaden Alps near the Jenner mountain in Bavaria, Germany. It lies at the foot of the Schneibstein in the Hagengebirge range and is a popular destination for hikers and day visitors thanks to its easy accessibility from the Jenner cable car. The hut also serves as a starting point for mountaineers undertaking larger tours in the Hagengebirge or the Göllstock. The Schneibsteinhaus was built mainly of natural stone between 1937 and 1939. From 1946 it was leased by the Naturfreunde Deutschlands from the Bayerische Staatsforsten (Bavarian State Forests). After a period of private operation, since autumn 2019 it has been leased by the Free State of Bavaria to the Sektion Berchtesgaden of the German Alpine Club. The hut is typically open from 1 May to 31 October; in winter it is closed and opens only on request for groups of 30 or more people. There is no winter room. The hut offers cozy parlours with a crackling tiled stove and a sun terrace with a view of the mighty Watzmann east face. Guests can book overnight accommodation online. The Schneibsteinhaus is a classic Alpine club hut experience, combining traditional hospitality with access to some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the Berchtesgaden Alps.
