Overview

SchmitterGroup GmbH is an international automotive supplier group headquartered in Thüngen, Bavaria, Germany. The company's core competence is tube processing for the automotive industry, and it supplies world-renowned car, truck and utility vehicle manufacturers. With over 70 years of experience, SchmitterGroup operates locations across Europe and Asia, and describes itself as a flexible partner with high-level service capabilities and a sophisticated understanding of system requirements. Its product portfolio spans chassis components such as steering housings, steering column parts and connecting tubes, as well as powertrain components including injection lines for diesel and petrol engines, common-rail injection parts, fuel distributors, piston cooling nozzles, drive shaft tubes, transmission lines and hydraulic lines. The company was founded in 1947 by Josef Schmitter in Bielefeld, Germany. Production of fuel and diesel injection lines began in 1956. The Thüngen production site was established in 1965 for the manufacture of injection, fuel and hydraulic hose lines. Over the following decades, SchmitterGroup expanded its product range and international footprint, opening a site in Ireland in 1990, acquiring Mannesmann subsidiary TubeTec GmbH in 2000, and establishing operations in Malaysia (2003), China and the USA (2005), and Austria (2006). In 2001 the company was converted into SchmitterGroup AG, and in 2002 it acquired Jacot S.A. (now SchmitterFrance S.A.S.). Economic difficulties in 2007/2008 led to a drastic restructuring and streamlining of the group. In December 2008, the Chinese Zhongding Co. Ltd. acquired 75.1% of the shares in SchmitterGroup, making it the majority owner. The group is managed by Norbert Hettstedt and Hans-Martin Trefzger. The Thüngen headquarters also houses the group's prototype and toolmaking operations and its development department. SchmitterGroup continues to invest in research and automation, cooperating closely with customers, academic institutes and industry partners to develop sustainable solutions for the automotive industry.

History

The Thüngen production site was established in 1965 for the manufacture of injection, fuel and hydraulic hose lines. In 1975, the product range was expanded to include piston cooling nozzles, and the following year to the production of power steering pipes. In 1990, a site was opened in Ireland. In 2000, the Mannesmann subsidiary TubeTec GmbH was acquired to strengthen the company's chassis division and renamed SchmitterChassis GmbH. In 2001, Schmitter GmbH was converted into SchmitterGroup AG. In 2002, the company acquired Jacot S.A. (now SchmitterFrance S.A.S.). In 2003, SchmitterAutomotiveAsia SDN.
