Overview

Schmetterling Verlag is a German publisher. Its program areas include politics & culture, Spanish, and other languages. The publishing house was founded in the mid-1980s in Stuttgart, Germany, by current managing directors Paul Sandner and Jörg Hunger, who were then students at the Fachhochschule für Druck (now Hochschule der Medien) in Stuttgart. Early publications included titles on development policy and political topics. The program has grown over time, and the publisher moved from a shared flat to a cellar and then to its current premises in Stuttgart-East. The publisher aims to produce books and media of high quality, professionally and with passion, often off the mainstream.

History

The publisher was born in the mid-1980s, during the time of punk, shoulder pads, and anti-nuclear protests in Wackersdorf. The current managing directors, Paul Sandner and Jörg Hunger, were students at the Fachhochschule für Druck (now Hochschule der Medien) in Stuttgart and were active in an 'Arbeitskreis Entwicklungspolitik' that focused on the exploitative relationship between industrial nations and the so-called Third World. Early publications included titles like 'Banken, Kredite und die Dritte Welt' and 'El Salvador. Der Krieg gegen die Zivilbevölkerung'. Over the years, the program grew slowly but steadily, and the publisher moved from a shared flat to a cellar under Rotebühlstraße and then to its current premises in Stuttgart-East.
