Overview
Schlossbrauerei Sandersdorf is a historic Bavarian castle brewery based in Altmannstein, in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, Germany. Its origins trace back to 1550, when the first brewery was established at Sandersdorf Castle. For centuries the brewery operated directly inside the castle, passing through the hands of noble families such as the Lossius and de Bassus families. In 1675, Dominikus de Bassus inherited both the castle and the brewery, and the de Bassus family remained closely associated with the enterprise for generations. It was only in 1946 that the brewery was moved from the castle itself to its current location below the castle at the entrance to the town, in order to gain more space. In April 1995, Baroness Margarete de Bassus sold the Schlossbrauerei Sandersdorf to Endriss & Mueller GmbH & Co KG. After the unexpected death of the master brewer Endriss in 1998, Mueller continued to run the business, but in 2000 the brewery was sold again, this time to Seifert. On 1 January 2019, the brewery was sold to Brauerei zum Kuchlbauer, a brewery based in Abensberg. From 2020 onward, the new managing directors Jacob Horsch and his father Leonhard Salleck brewed exclusively organic beer under the old name and old coat of arms. Since the takeover, only one variety has been brewed, the Sandersdorfer Bio Hell, and the filling of barrels and bottles was moved to Abensberg. The brand is therefore a traditional Bavarian brewery brand that has been revived as an organic beer label under the ownership of Brauerei zum Kuchlbauer. Its flagship product is the Sandersdorfer Bio Hell, an organic pale lager. The brewery is part of the Bavarian brewing tradition and represents a small, heritage-focused operation within the German beer market.
History
The history of Schlossbrauerei Sandersdorf begins in 1550, when the first brewery was established at Sandersdorf Castle in Bavaria. In 1650, the castle and brewery belonged to Johann Jakob Lossius, who bequeathed both to Dominikus de Bassus in 1675. The de Bassus family thus became the long-term owners of the castle brewery. Until 1946, the brewery was located directly inside the castle. For reasons of space, it was then moved to its current location below the castle at the entrance to the town. In April 1995, Baroness Margarete de Bassus sold the Schlossbrauerei Sandersdorf to Endriss & Mueller GmbH & Co KG. After the unexpected death of the master brewer Endriss in 1998, Mueller continued to run the company. However, in 2000, the brewery was ultimately sold to Seifert. Since the takeover, only one variety has been brewed, the Sandersdorfer Bio Hell. At the same time, the filling of barrels and bottles was moved to Abensberg.
