Overview
Schlossbrauerei Rheder is a German brewery based in Brakel-Rheder in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is one of the historic castle breweries of Germany, operated continuously by the family of the Barons von Spiegel and von Mengersen, who settled at Rheder in 1400 and managed estates for the principality of Paderborn and the abbey of Heerse. The brewing right was granted on 2 July 1686 by Hermann Werner von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht, Prince-Bishop of Paderborn, to Christian Falcko von Mengersen, owner of Rheder Castle. Since then the brewery has remained in the family's ownership. The brewery produces a range of traditional German beer styles under the Schloßbräu Rheder brand, including Pils, dark lager (St. Annen dunkel), Doppelbock, wheat beer (Rheder Weizen), a malt beer (Schloßbräu Rheder Malz), a light beer (Rheder Hell), non-alcoholic wheat beer, a jubilee beer (Jubiläumsbier 1686), Radler and the historic Husarentrunk. The brewing water for Schloßbräu Rheder Pils comes from the Nethe nature reserve, and the brewing barley is processed on site. The operating company is Gräflich von Mengersen'sche Dampfbrauerei GmbH & Co. KG, a private family firm. The brewery is a regional producer serving the local market in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, and it combines its brewing operations with the historic castle estate at Rheder. Its long unbroken family ownership and its 1686 brewing privilege make it one of the older continuously operating breweries in Germany.
History
The Rheder estate has been associated with the family of the Barons von Spiegel and von Mengersen since 1400, when the family settled there and managed properties for the principality of Paderborn and the abbey of Heerse. The village of Rheder itself was first mentioned in 1120. On 2 July 1686, Christian Falcko von Mengersen, owner of Rheder Castle, obtained the brewing right from Hermann Werner von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht, the Prince-Bishop of Paderborn. From that privilege the Schloßbrauerei Rheder traces its continuous existence, and the brewery has remained in the family's possession ever since. Over the centuries the brewery developed into a regional producer of traditional German beer styles. Its product range includes Schloßbräu Rheder Pils, St. Annen dunkel, Schloßbräu Doppelbock, Schloßbräu Husarentrunk, Rheder Weizen, Schloßbräu Rheder Malz, Rheder Hell, a non-alcoholic Hefe-Weizen, Jubiläumsbier 1686 and Radler. The brewing water for Schloßbräu Rheder Pils is drawn from the Nethe nature reserve, and the brewing barley is processed on site. The operating company is Gräflich von Mengersen'sche Dampfbrauerei GmbH & Co. KG, a private family firm based at the historic castle estate in Brakel-Rheder, North Rhine-Westphalia.
