Overview

Schleswig-Holsteinische Familienforschung e.V. is a German genealogical society based in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein. Founded on 4 May 1948 as the Schleswig-Holsteinische Gesellschaft für Familienforschung und Wappenkunde e.V., it has around 300 members and maintains a library housed within the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein. The society is a cooperation partner of the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Heimatbund and a member of the Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft genealogischer Verbände (DAGV). The association provides information, advice, and help for self-help in family research, and promotes cooperation and exchange with friendly associations and working groups. Since 1962 it has published the Familienkundliches Jahrbuch Schleswig-Holstein, an annual journal that allows members and external authors to publish research results related to Schleswig-Holstein. The society's library contains over 3,500 publications of genealogical specialist literature and periodicals. Independent family-history publications and collections find long-term secure storage in the library at the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein and are available to anyone interested. The society's organs are the members' assembly, the board, and an advisory council. The members' assembly meets annually, traditionally in May, at changing locations in Schleswig-Holstein. Members can use the library, participate in lectures, exchange information via the association's internal mailing list, and access a database in which researcher data can be stored and viewed. Since 1968, the society has jointly organized the Nordelbischer Genealogentag in Rickling/Holstein with the Genealogische Gesellschaft Hamburg and the Verein für Familienforschung e.V. Lübeck, with the hosting rotating among the three associations. The society's history is closely tied to its library. G. E. Hoffmann rescued around 200 writings from the years 1933–1944. Hedwig Sievert, city archivist of Kiel, set up the first library in a side room of the Kiel city archive. Due to renovation work, new premises had to be found in 1975; the books were stored with a forwarding agent for 10 years until August 1984, when 60 shelf meters of books found a new home at Harmsstraße 13 in Kiel. The rooms became too small and were not barrier-free. In February 1997, new premises with 130 shelf meters were occupied at Von-der-Goltz-Allee 48 in Kiel. Limited space led to a move to Königsweg 103 in Kiel in 2001. In mid-2006, the entire collection was transferred to the holdings of the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein, where it has the department signature "SHF". Today, the society continues to serve as a competent partner for family research in Schleswig-Holstein, offering advice, publications, events, and a specialized library. It remains an active community for genealogists interested in the region's family history.
