History

Schilke Music Products began with the passion and dream of Renold O. Schilke, who was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on June 30, 1910. He became a brass soloist at age 11 with the Holton factory band in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, in 1921, began working at a machine shop in 1924, and formally studied the trumpet from 1927, meeting Belgian brass instrument designer Victor Mahillon. In 1928 he relocated to Chicago from Brussels to study trumpet with Edward Llewellyn, principal trumpet player for the Chicago Symphony, at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, and also began working for a mouthpiece maker. In 1930 he began taking classes in tool and die making and worked with Edward to develop mouthpiece designs, continuing through the early 1960s. In 1936 he officially joined the Chicago Symphony and began producing his first mouthpiece model in collaboration with Edward Llewellyn. Schilke Music was founded in 1956 by Renold O. Schilke during his tenure with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Over more than four decades, Renold designed instruments and mouthpieces that are described as having revolutionized the brass instrument industry. The company states it has maintained a tradition of handcrafted instruments and mouthpieces, with all parts produced in Chicago, Illinois and assembled by master artisans.
