Overview

Schiele & Schön is a German specialist publishing house (Fachverlag) based in Berlin. It was founded in 1946 by Otto Schiele and Willi Schön, after the American military government in Berlin licensed them from 16 December to publish "technical works and related literature" under certain conditions. The company built its reputation on technical and trade journals, professional books and, later, digital media such as e-books, e-papers, DVDs and apps. Its thematic spectrum covered film, TV and photography, fashion, sustainable building and construction planning, and foundry engineering (Gießereiwesen). The publisher's early years were difficult: paper procurement was scarce or impossible in the post-war period, and the 1948 currency reform caused orders to collapse. Nevertheless, it expanded through the acquisition of titles and book departments, including Gießerei-Praxis (1950), Textilindustrie (1952), Werkzeugmaschinen und Werkzeuge (1954), and fernmelde praxis (1959, today Telekom Praxis). It also took over technical book departments from the publishers Westphal (1958) and Hellmuth Lange (1964). Over the decades it absorbed 13 monthly journals, among them Fernmelde-Praxis (from 1959) and Schmalfilm (from 1964). Ownership changed over time. In 1957 Gerd Bucerius took over Otto Schiele's share; in 1967 Peter Schön, Willi Schön's son, became co-owner. In 2002 the family-run publisher was sold, and Karl-Michael Mehnert and Harald Rauh took over management. In 2018 Hans-Gerd Conrad joined the circle of shareholders. The company continued to acquire and launch titles, including FKT (2002), Deutsches IngenieurBlatt (from 2006), PC & MUSIK (2007) and greenBUILDING (2008). In 2017 it expanded into congresses and events, and since July 2018 it has offered events for industry and associations under the "Schöne Events" brand. In 2023 the company became insolvent. Schiele & Schön's journal portfolio included Deutsches IngenieurBlatt, FKT, Giesserei-Praxis (with the supplement Druckguss), greenbuilding, vdt magazin, zoom (discontinued 2016), videofilmen (discontinued 2017), camera, and t&m. Its book list included the Gießerei-Lexikon, Gießerei-Fachwörterbuch, Kalkulationstabellen Straßen- und Tiefbau, Systemschnitt, Kleine Kostümkunde, Kalkulationstabellen Hochbau, Taschenbuch der Gießerei-Praxis, Taschenbuch für die Textilindustrie, Handbuch HD-Produktion 2013, Audio-Vision, Lehrbuch der Filmgestaltung, Super8 Scope, and Sound-Design – Sound-Montage – Soundtrack-Komposition. The company's website domain, schiele-schoen.de, has since been repurposed for an unrelated online casino information page, which is not part of the publisher's original business.

History

Schiele & Schön was founded in 1946 by Otto Schiele and Willi Schön. The American military government in Berlin licensed them from 16 December to publish "technical works and related literature" under certain conditions. The first books included Selbstkostenermittlung für Entrümmerungsarbeiten, and in 1947 the first scientific journal, Frequenz, was launched with a print run of 7,000 copies that sold out completely. The post-war period brought severe challenges: paper procurement was difficult or impossible, and the 1948 currency reform caused a sharp drop in orders. In 1950 the publisher took over the trade journal Gießerei-Praxis and began issuing the first annual pocket-book series of the same name. This was followed by Textilindustrie (1952), Werkzeugmaschinen und Werkzeuge (1954), and fernmelde praxis (1959, today Telekom Praxis). The basis for continuing these series and adding new titles to the book division was the acquisition of the technical book departments of the publishers Westphal (1958) and Hellmuth Lange (1964). Over time, 13 monthly journals were added to the portfolio, including Fernmelde-Praxis (from 1959) and Schmalfilm (from 1964). Ownership evolved: in 1957 Gerd Bucerius took over Otto Schiele's share; in 1967 Peter Schön, Willi Schön's son, was appointed co-owner. In 2002 the family-run publisher was sold, and Karl-Michael Mehnert and Harald Rauh took over management. The new management acquired FKT, the association journal of the Kino- und Fernsehtechnische Gesellschaft, from Heidelberger Verlag Hüthig GmbH & Co. KG. In 2005 the Elektromagazin (founded 1955) was transferred to the journal division of Verlagsgruppe De Gruyter. From 2006 the publisher also published the Deutsches IngenieurBlatt, issued by the Bundesingenieurkammer. In 2007 it took over PC & MUSIK, and in 2008 it founded greenBUILDING, a magazine on sustainable building and planning. In 2017 the company expanded into congresses and events, and since July 2018 it has offered events for industry and associations under the "Schöne Events" brand. In 2018 Hans-Gerd Conrad joined the circle of shareholders. In 2023 the company became insolvent. The journal portfolio in recent years included Deutsches IngenieurBlatt (member magazine of the Bundesingenieurkammer), FKT (broadcast technology magazine and member magazine of the FKTG), Giesserei-Praxis (foundry journal with the supplement Druckguss, 5 times a year), greenbuilding (sustainable planning and building; integrated as a digital magazine into the Deutsches Ingenieurblatt website in 2020), vdt magazin (member magazine of the Verband der Tonmeister), zoom (discontinued 2016), videofilmen (discontinued 2017), camera (discontinued), and t&m (technologie & management, member magazine of the Verband deutscher Wirtschaftsingenieure, discontinued). Selected book publications included the Gießerei-Lexikon, Gießerei-Fachwörterbuch, Kalkulationstabellen Straßen- und Tiefbau, Systemschnitt Bd. 1+2, Kleine Kostümkunde, Kalkulationstabellen Hochbau, Taschenbuch der Gießerei-Praxis, Taschenbuch für die Textilindustrie, Handbuch HD-Produktion 2013, Audio-Vision, Lehrbuch der Filmgestaltung, Super8 Scope, and Sound-Design – Sound-Montage – Soundtrack-Komposition.
