Overview

Scherdel Bier is a German brewery based in Hof, Upper Franconia, Bavaria, with roots dating to 1831 when Georg Matthäus Scherdel received permission to practise the baker's trade and soon began brewing beer in the town's communal brewhouses. In 1862 he and his son Bernhard built their own brewery with a brewhouse and malthouse on Unterkotzauer Weg in Hof, and Scherdel became the first Hof brewer to transport beer by horse and ox cart into Prussia and Saxony, helping to establish Hof's reputation as a beer town. The brewery's modern prosperity came in the 1930s with the introduction of Scherdel Edelhell Pilsner, though the Second World War and the loss of sales territories in central Germany forced a reorientation toward southern Germany. During the 1970s and 1980s the private brewery grew into an important regional supplier in north-eastern Bavaria. After financial difficulties and insolvency proceedings in early 2003, Kulmbacher Brauerei AG took over Scherdel-Brauerei on 1 October 2003, continuing to operate it as an independent brewery in Hof. The brewery celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2006 with redesigned traditional labels and a refreshed logo, and since 2011 it has produced the seasonal Schlappenbier for the Hofer Schlappentag. Today Scherdel Bier GmbH & Co. KG is a subsidiary of Kulmbacher Brauerei and offers a range of premium beers including Pilsner, Edelhell, wheat beers, lager, Radler, dark beer, light and non-alcoholic variants, Landbier and Zoigl.

History

Scherdel Bier traces its origins to 1831, when Georg Matthäus Scherdel moved with his family from Schwarzenbach an der Saale to Hof and received permission on 23 April 1831 to practise the baker's trade. As a baker he understood yeast and fermentation, and he soon devoted himself intensively and exclusively to brewing beer in the town's communal brewhouses in order to supply the surrounding villages. Because he could not use these brewhouses as freely as he wished, in 1862 he and his son Bernhard built their own brewery, consisting of a brewhouse and a malthouse at Unterkotzauer Weg 9 in Hof, near which Scherdel owned a stone cellar. Georg Matthäus Scherdel was the first brewer in Hof to transport his beers into Prussia and Saxony using horse-drawn and ox-drawn carts, which contributed to Hof's development as a beer town. A new period of prosperity for the brewery came in the 1930s with the introduction of Scherdel Edelhell Pilsner. This was interrupted by the Second World War and especially by the loss of sales territories in central Germany (the area of the Weimar Republic). The loss was compensated by a reorientation toward southern Germany. During the 1970s and 1980s the private brewery became an important regional supplier in north-eastern Bavaria. In early 2003 the brewery ran into financial difficulties and had to file for insolvency. On 1 October 2003, Kulmbacher Brauerei AG took over Scherdel-Brauerei as part of the insolvency proceedings, and it continued to operate as an independent brewery in Hof. Scherdel-Brauerei celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2006; the occasion was used to equip Scherdel beer bottles with new traditional labels and to redesign the company logo. Michael Krasser, former sales director of Kulmbacher Brauerei, became managing director of Scherdel-Brauerei in June 2007. Since 2011 Scherdel has produced the Schlappenbier for the Hofer Schlappentag. Today Scherdel Bier GmbH & Co. KG is a subsidiary of Kulmbacher Brauerei and offers a range of premium beers.
