Overview

The Schöne-Aussicht-Hütte (also known as Schutzhütte Schöne Aussicht, Schutzhaus Schöne Aussicht, or Rifugio Bella Vista) is a private alpine mountain hut located at approximately 2,842–2,845 metres above sea level in the Ötztal Alps, just south-west of the Hochjoch in the Schnalskamm ridge that forms the border between Austrian North Tyrol and Italian South Tyrol. The hut sits on Italian territory, close to the border and adjacent to the Schnalstal Glacier ski area, which is accessed by the Schnalstaler Gletscherbahn cable car. It is a hospitality and accommodation brand, offering rooms, dining, and mountain experiences under the BellaVista name, and is associated with the Golden Rose Hotel (Goldene Rose Karthaus) in Karthaus, Schnals. The hut is owned by Paul Grüner and has been in his possession since 1999. The website presents the hut as a place of retreat and perspective at 2,845 metres, with offerings including accommodation, a Zollhaus, an igloo, a restaurant, skiing, ski touring, hiking, and wellness. The hut also operates webcams and a weather station. The Schöne-Aussicht-Hütte is a well-known waypoint on the Hochjoch route used for transhumance, where sheep are driven from the Schnalstal to the Ötztal in early June and back in mid-September. The hut is a starting point for several summit tours, including the Weißkugel (3,739 m), Innere Quellspitze (3,516 m), Fineilspitze (3,516 m), and Im Hintern Eis (3,270 m), and is connected to other huts such as the Hochjoch-Hospiz, Similaunhütte, and Martin-Busch-Hütte. The Schöne-Aussicht-Hütte is a commercial brand in the alpine hospitality sector, operating as a private enterprise under the ownership of Paul Grüner and associated with the Golden Rose Hotel. It serves guests in the South Tyrol region and the wider Ötztal Alps, with a focus on mountain dining, accommodation, and outdoor experiences.

History

The history of the Schöne-Aussicht-Hütte begins in 1869, when Benedikt Klotz from Vent, supported by Franz Senn, built a first shelter at the Hochjoch, which did not last long. From 1886, Serafin Gurschler from Kurzras built a path and opened a new hut in 1890, which was already partially managed. In 1896/1897, the hut, which had become too small, was expanded and continuously managed. In 1904, an extension was added. After a period of closure during World War I, the son of the builder, Hermann Gurschler, reopened the Schöne Aussicht in 1924 and began operating it in winter from 1932. In 1933, after another expansion, the house reached its current size, and from the following year it was operated year-round. During World War II, the hut remained closed; in 1953 it received a material cable car. Since the construction of the ski lifts in 1975, the hut has been located near the ski area. Since 1999, the Schöne-Aussicht-Hütte has been owned by Paul Grüner. In 2006, an extensive renovation took place. The hut is a waypoint on the Hochjoch route, where sheep are driven from the Schnalstal to the Ötztal in early June and return in mid-September. The usual ascent leads from the south from Kurzras in the Schnalstal on a wide, marked path in about two hours to the hut. Using the Schnalstaler Gletscherbahn, the hut can be reached from the mountain station on the Grawand in one hour. From the north, the hut can be reached in about five hours from Vent. This marked ascent leads past the Hochjochhospiz, a shelter in the rear Rofental. From the Hochjochhospiz, the trail leads down to the bridge over the Hintereisbach coming from the Hintereisferner. Then up through the Hochjochfernertal to the Hochjoch, always west of the stream fed by the Hochjochferner. The usual summit tours from the hut are: Weißkugel (3,739 m), Innere Quellspitze (3,516 m), Fineilspitze (3,516 m), Im Hintern Eis (3,270 m). Transitions are possible to the Hochjoch-Hospiz, Similaunhütte and Martin-Busch-Hütte. Near the hut, the Geography Institute of the University of Innsbruck operates two automatic meteorological weather stations: Bella Vista and Latschbloder.
