Schön Klinik

The Schön Klinik Gruppe is described on its official website as the largest family-owned company in the German hospital sector, founded in 1985. It operates 17 clinics and 47 outpatient and day-clinic facilities in Germany and the United Kingdom, with around 13,600 employees. Its portfolio includes major referral hospitals, general and standard care hospitals, and specialist clinics in psychosomatics, orthopedics, neurology, and rehabilitation. The group also includes the telemedical online clinic MindDoc. The group states it has measured treatment outcomes since 1986 and developed its own quality measurement instrument, the Medical Quality and Excellence Index (MedQEX).

The Schön Klinik Gruppe was founded in 1985. According to the group's history page, the founders Else and Franz-Josef Schön had prepared the concept for a rehabilitation clinic in Prien am Chiemsee as building developers in the early 1980s, but the main cost bearer unexpectedly withdrew its commitment, leaving the finished clinic empty. Prof. Hanns Hippius, professor of psychiatry at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, discovered the building during a bicycle tour at Chiemsee. In discussion with the Schön family, Prof. Hippius developed the idea of opening a ward for people with eating disorders in the clinic. His senior physician, Dr. Manfred Fichter, had recently sought women with bulimia for a study; they had expected about 200 responses but received more than 3,000. On 1 January 1985, the Medizinisch-Psychosomatische Klinik Roseneck opened, led by Prof. Dr. Manfred Fichter. The clinic was fully occupied within a few months. The group states that since 1986 it has evaluated treatment results and derived improvements across all locations, and it developed its own measurement instrument, the Medical Quality and Excellence Index (MedQEX), which examines treatment quality, patient safety, and patient experience.
