Overview
Scarp de' tenis is an Italian non-profit street newspaper founded in Milan in 1994 by advertising professional Pietro Greppi. Its name is inspired by the title of Enzo Jannacci's song "El portava i scarp del tennis". The first editor was Paolo Lambruschi. After publishing 14 issues, the project was transferred at the end of 1995 to Caritas Ambrosiana; at the beginning of 1996 Cooperativa Oltre, the communication structure of Caritas Ambrosiana, became the publisher, and distribution initially took place in central Milan. The paper was relaunched in March 1996 with issue No. 1 of the new edition. Over the following decades Scarp de' tenis expanded to other Italian cities: Turin (with the association Opportunanda) and Naples (with the cooperative La Locomotiva) between the late 1990s and early 2000s, Genoa (Fondazione Auxilium) around the end of 2005, and from 2008, in collaboration with Caritas Italiana, new editorial offices opened in Vicenza, Rimini, Florence, Catania and Palermo. The magazine also reached the streets of Como, Bergamo, Verona, Salerno and Venice. Paolo Brivio succeeded Lambruschi as editor, and a second graphic redesign came with issue No. 187 in 2014 under editor Stefano Lampertico. In 2015 the magazine joined the International Network of Street Papers (INSP). In 2018 its stories became the core of a four-episode television programme, "Scarp de' tenis - Incontri sulla strada", broadcast on Tv2000, hosted by Giacomo Poretti and directed by Ranuccio Sodi. Many prominent Italian journalists have contributed to Scarp de' tenis. From 2015 until his death, Gianni Mura wrote a regular column; Piero Colaprico, Giangiacomo Schiavi, Giorgio Terruzzi, Alex Corlazzoli, Paolo Lambruschi and Bianca Stancanelli also have regular columns in each issue. The publication has received numerous awards, including the Ambrogino d'oro from the City of Milan in 2014, the Premiolino journalism prize in June 2015, the Premio Speciale from the Premio Internazionale Biagio Agnes in February 2017, the Special News Service INSP Award 2017 for an interview with Pope Francis, the Premio Buone Notizie 2019 for editor Stefano Lampertico, the Premio Ucsi Natale Special Prize in December 2019, and the INSP Award for best cover on 11 September 2024 at the INSP Global Summit. Today Scarp de' tenis remains a monthly street magazine sold by vendors who are homeless or socially excluded, offering them a legitimate income and a voice. It is published by Caritas Ambrosiana and distributed across numerous Italian cities, continuing its mission of social inclusion and quality journalism.
