Overview
ScanHaus Marlow is a German manufacturer of prefabricated wooden houses (Fertighäuser) based in Marlow, in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The company operates under the legal name R. Kossow + Levermann GmbH and has been increasingly focused on prefabricated house construction since 1992. Its origins date back to 1891, when Robert Kossow founded R. Kossow & Levermann as a sawmill with an attached barrel factory. The business was expropriated in 1953 during the GDR era and later returned to family ownership after German reunification, when Friedemann Kunz, a great-great-grandson of the founder, repurchased the state-owned operation from the Treuhandanstalt in 1992. Today ScanHaus Marlow designs and builds single-family prefabricated houses, including bungalows, 1.5-storey houses, town villas, multi-generation houses, semi-detached houses, and promotional model homes. The company markets its homes under the slogan "Made in Germany" and emphasizes guaranteed fixed prices, a "Blue Living" concept, and a "build first, pay later" financing model. It advertises over 30 years of experience in prefabricated construction. The company operates its own 4-star Recknitztal Hotel opposite the factory premises in Marlow, which since 2013 has included the Marlower Brauerei brewpub. In August 2021, the company handed over its ten-thousandth house in Berendshagen. ScanHaus Marlow is active in regional sponsorship, including the Verband für Behinderten- und Rehabilitationssport M-V e.V., the annual ScanHaus Cup cycling race in Marlow, the professional football club Hansa Rostock (since 2002), and the Rostock Seawolves basketball team (since the 2016/2017 season). The company remains privately held and family-owned.
History
The company was founded in 1891 by Robert Kossow as R. Kossow & Levermann, a sawmill with an attached barrel factory in Marlow. The business had a steady order book because the local dairy in Marlow needed a continuous supply of butter barrels. Carl Kossow led the company until its expropriation in 1953. As part of the "Aktion Rose" on 10 February 1953, the operation was nationalized without compensation and Carl Kossow was imprisoned. The family emigrated to Sweden in the 1950s. During state ownership, the company primarily produced wooden frames for furniture under the name Holzwerke Ribnitz-Damgarten. From 1969 it was part of the Möbelkombinat Nord, specifically the Wohnraum division and VEB Ribnitzer Polstermöbel. After German reunification in 1990, Friedemann Kunz, a great-great-grandson of founder Robert Kossow, returned from Sweden to Marlow with his family and took over the state-owned operation from the Treuhandanstalt in 1992. At that time, 45 employees worked at the company. The business model was fundamentally changed, and the company began importing Scandinavian prefabricated houses, of which three were sold in 1991. In 1992, the operation switched to in-house production, and in its first financial year it sold three self-produced prefabricated houses. At the end of 2005, a nearly three-year process was completed in which almost five million euros were invested in the Marlow site and in new model houses. In 2007, another office complex was built, which included meeting rooms and a sports center that can be used by employees and Marlow residents. In 2008, the company's own 4-star Recknitztal Hotel opened opposite the factory premises in Marlow. In 2013, the Marlower Brauerei brewpub was integrated into the hotel complex. In August 2021, the company handed over its ten-thousandth house in Berendshagen. The company is also active in sponsorship and events. It is the main sponsor of the Verband für Behinderten- und Rehabilitationssport M-V e.V., supporting the state association financially through a two-year partnership. The ScanHaus Cup in Marlow annually opens the cycling calendar of the state cycling association and is part of the nationwide "bike on" initiative; in 2019, around 600 participants and over 3,000 spectators attended. Since 2002, ScanHaus Marlow has sponsored the professional football club Hansa Rostock and is present in the Ostseestadion with perimeter advertising, among other things. Since the 2016/2017 season, it has been a premium sponsor of the Rostock Seawolves.
