Overview

Scaip, an acronym for Servizio Collaborazione Assistenza Internazionale Piamartino, is an Italian non-governmental organization (ONG) and non-profit social utility organization (ONLUS) legally established as an association by deed on 29 October 1983. It is engaged in international cooperation in Africa and South America. It has no profit motive and no political ties, and operates within the broad world of Christian volunteering with the sole aim of "promoting and managing cooperation interventions useful to the human, economic and social progress of developing countries" (Article 3 of its Statute). The origins of Scaip trace back to the works and thought of Giovanni Battista Piamarta, who was proclaimed a saint on 21 October 2012. Piamarta founded the Artigianelli school in Brescia which, in 1886, represented a true act of courage and love toward young people. Thousands of students were professionally trained in the classrooms of the well-known institute, securing a working future in years of great uncertainty. Piamarta founded the Congregation of the Holy Family of Nazareth, whose members are commonly called Piamartini Fathers; it is to them and to a small group of laypeople that the birth of Scaip is owed. Over the years Scaip has grown within the landscape of Italian associations as an NGO recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as a Non-Profit Organization of Social Utility (ONLUS) by law as provided for by Legislative Decree 460/97. Scaip is associated with Focsiv (Federation of Christian Organizations of International Voluntary Service), Co.Lomba (Cooperazione Lombardia) and the Peace Council of the Municipality of Brescia. Today, through the funds raised, Scaip promotes international cooperation projects in the countries of the Global South in the sectors of vocational training, school education, water and environment, agricultural development and more. Projects in Africa have involved communities in Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In South America, projects have involved communities in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Peru. In Italy, Scaip promotes activities of Education for Global Citizenship (ECM), awareness-raising, education for solidarity, global-mindedness and sustainable development: the goal is to spread a culture of cooperation and participation among young people. Scaip promotes Voluntary Civil Service projects in Italy and abroad (Brazil and Mozambique). Scaip's activity is financed through private funds (donations from individuals, grant-making bodies and companies) and public funds (through participation in national and community calls for proposals).
