Overview
SATA Group, formally the Société d'Aménagement Touristique de l'Alpe d'Huez et des Grandes Rousses (S.A.T.A.), is a French company that operates ski resorts. It is a société d'économie mixte (mixed economy company) dedicated to local tourism development for the Alpe d'Huez grand domaine ski area. The company holds the concession to operate the ski lifts and pistes across five communes. Its history reaches back to the 1930s, when the first lifts were built in Alpe d'Huez by Jean Pomagalski. In 1958 a group of businessmen and private owners founded a company and bought all the existing lifts, which had belonged to individual owners. In 1961 the municipality of Huez acquired 15% of the share capital and became the majority shareholder in 1989. Today SATA is a limited, mixed economy company with the majority of its share capital owned by the municipality of Huez; the remaining shares are held by banking institutions and small investors. SATA operates the ski lifts of Alpe d'Huez, Villard-Reculas and Auris-en-Oisans, and from 1986 to 2013 also those of Oz-en-Oisans and Vaujany, giving it management of the entire Alpe d'Huez ski area. Since 2017 it has been the operator of La Grave-La Meije, since 2020 of Les Deux Alpes, and since 2023 again of Oz and Vaujany. This makes it the second-largest group in ski area operation in France, after Compagnie des Alpes. At the end of 2025 it was announced that SATA would take over management of the loss-making Alpe du Grand Serre, which had been expected to close permanently, for the 2025/2026 season. The company markets its lift passes and resort services under the Skipass Alpe d'Huez brand, offering summer and winter lift passes, mountain biking, pedestrian and fun pass products, and activities such as the Happy Luge rail sledging, yoga at Pic Blanc and tubing. SATA has held ISO 9001 quality certification and obtained OHSAS 18001 safety certification in April 2010.
