Overview

Sasco Capital is an employee-owned asset management boutique with a long-standing history. Established in 1985, the firm has successfully managed a contrarian value strategy for some of the country’s largest public pension funds, multi-national corporations, foundations, endowments and high-net-worth individuals. The firm employs a unique, time-tested approach to value investing, resulting in high active share portfolios that have produced long-term excess returns and significant capital appreciation for its clients.

History

Sasco Capital’s history dates to the early days of institutional investing, when its founders were hired as the first internal equity portfolio managers of IBM’s burgeoning corporate pension plan. In 1985, the team spun out from IBM to form Sasco Capital, keeping the pension as its first client. While Sasco Capital has grown and added investment expertise through the years, its founders continue to play an active role and have engrained the firm’s investment philosophy in a new generation of portfolio managers and analysts, ensuring the continued success of the firm. Key milestones include: April 1981 inception of the Contrarian Value Portfolio by future founders of Sasco Capital, the first external team hired to manage equity investments for IBM’s in-house corporate pension fund. February 1986 Sasco Capital is launched, implementing the contrarian value process used at IBM (Mid Cap Value Strategy maintains original IBM track record.) January 1987 Launched originally with IBM funding, Sasco Capital wins its first investment mandate from a new corporate pension. November 1990 Sasco Capital awarded large state fund mandate, marking its first client outside the corporate pension and endowment space. April 2002 Sasco Capital launches Small Cap Value Portfolio for an existing client – closed to other investors. May 2006 Sasco Capital starts a Smid Cap Value Portfolio for a Fund of Funds client – not offered to others.
