In 2015, former Sarcos manager Fraser Smith and intellectual-property strategist Ben Wolff led an acquisition of the business from Raytheon. The independent company subsequently raised capital to commercialize robotic exoskeletons, remotely operated systems, mobile robots, and manipulators under the Guardian product family. Sarcos became publicly traded in September 2021 after merging with Rotor Acquisition Corp., a special-purpose acquisition company, and its shares initially traded on Nasdaq under STRC. Kiva Allgood became chief executive in December 2021. In April 2022, Sarcos acquired RE2, Inc., adding mobile robotic and teleoperated-system capabilities to its portfolio. The company encountered substantial commercialization and funding challenges after its public listing. History
Sarcos Research Corporation was established in 1983 by University of Utah professor Stephen Jacobsen. It began as a bioengineering research organization and developed a broad technical portfolio covering robotics, animatronics, medical devices, prosthetic systems, miniature electromechanical components, and specialized equipment. Its work included entertainment installations, robotic dinosaurs for a Universal Studios attraction, robotic fountains associated with the Bellagio hotel, NASA-related spacesuit testing equipment, and motorized prosthetic limbs. The company's central competency increasingly became robotic systems. In 2001, it won a DARPA research award to create a powered exoskeleton for military applications.
