Overview
Sarashina Horii (株式会社更科堀井) is a soba restaurant company founded in 1789 (Kansei 1). Its head office is in Moto-Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo, and it operates restaurants including its Azabu-Juban main store, a Tachikawa store, and a Nihonbashi Takashimaya store. Its signature offering is white sarashina soba, made using only the core of the buckwheat kernel.
History
According to the Horii family tradition, the business was founded in 1789 (Kansei 1). The first generation had been trading in Shinshu cloth and turned to running a soba shop, setting up near the Hoshina family's Edo residence in Azabu Nagasaka-cho. The sign read 'Shinshu Sarashina Soba Dokoro Nunoya Tahei'. During its peak in the mid-Meiji era it is said to have delivered to the empress and imperial households. It fell into decline from around the early Showa depression and was forced to close in 1941 (Showa 16). After the war the shop was rebuilt, but as it became a company organization with outside participants, the registered trademarks 'Nagasaka Sarashina' and 'Nunoya Tahei' left the Horii family's hands. In December 1984 (Showa 59), Ryozaemon Horii opened 'Sohonke Sarashina Horii' in the Azabu-Juban shopping street, without leaving the Azabu area, with the wish to revive the family business tradition of over 200 years since the mid-Edo period under the Horii family descended from the founder.
