Overview

Sanyo Trading Co., Ltd. is a Japanese trading company established in May 1947 by former employees of the Kobe branch of the dismantled Mitsui Bussan. It began with rubber import agency work and expanded through agency agreements with overseas manufacturers. The company relocated its head office to Tokyo in 1964 and built a global network of subsidiaries and offices. It withdrew from its agrochemical business around the turn of the 21st century and refocused on four priority markets: fine chemicals, industrial products, sustainability, and life sciences. It listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2012 and became a Prime Market listed company in 2022.

History

Sanyo Trading was established in May 1947 in Kobe by volunteers from the former Mitsui Bussan Kobe branch following the dissolution of the zaibatsu. At founding, only President Eiichi Tamaki was familiar with trading company operations. The company obtained qualification to act as a rubber import agent from the Mining and Industrial Trading Public Corporation and began distribution agency work, then successively concluded agency agreements with overseas manufacturers. In 1964, it relocated its head office to the Sanyo Trading Building completed in Kanda Nishikicho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. It subsequently established group companies in various fields and placed offices in the United States, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Detroit, and other locations worldwide. Around the turn of the 21st century, it decided to withdraw from its agrochemical business, which had been a core business, and restructured to focus on profitable products, leading to rapid growth in the industrial materials division handling automotive interior components. In 2012, it listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (Second Section), and in 2013 moved to the First Section. In 2022, following the Tokyo Stock Exchange market reorganization, it became a Prime Market designated stock. Currently, it focuses on four markets: fine chemicals, industrial products, sustainability, and life sciences.
