History
The business that became Sanyo Foods began in 1954 in Fukagawa, Koto, Tokyo, under the motto of manufacturing smoked salmon in Tokyo. In 1957 it established a head office, sales office, and factory in Eitai, Koto, and succeeded in developing a new product, 'benisake kairyo onkun' (improved warm-smoked red salmon). In 1958, after many trials, it developed a Nordic-style smoked salmon that renewed the conventional image of smoked products and began mass production. In 1963 it expanded to Alaska to secure raw materials, expanding its business with the cooperation of Mitsubishi Corporation. In 1968 it built a comprehensive food factory with modern equipment in Urayasu, Chiba, to meet rapidly increasing demand. In 1978 its Hokkaido Chinai factory, one of the world's largest smoked-product factories, was completed, and the company established itself as a top brand of smoked salmon in both name and reality. In 1981, preserving its accumulated tradition and latest technology, it was newly established as Sanyo Foods Co., Ltd. in Urayasu, Chiba. Subsequent milestones include opening the Osaka sales office (now Kansai sales office) in 1982; introducing TQC and CIS in 1983; opening the Sapporo sales office in 1987; opening sales and logistics bases in Shinonome, Koto, Tokyo and the Fukuoka sales office in 1990; building the Kashima factory in 1991; opening the Tohoku sales office in 1994; consolidating sales and logistics bases at headquarters in 1995; launching a new information system through business reform and completing a new office building and factory in Ichikawa, Chiba in 2000, integrating and relocating headquarters functions, the Kashima factory, and processing/logistics centers; relocating the Kansai sales office to Suita, Osaka in 2000; obtaining HACCP certification for the Hokkaido Chinai factory in 2005 for smoked salmon; obtaining HACCP certification for the headquarters and Shiohama factory in 2006 for seafood terrine; opening Fukuoka and Sendai resident offices in 2015 and closing the Shiohama factory due to outsourcing of cooked food production; in 2017 changing the parent company from Mitsubishi Corporation to Toyo Reizo Co., Ltd. and moving the headquarters from Shiohama to Higashihama in Ichikawa, Chiba; closing the Fukuoka resident office and integrating it into the Kansai sales office in 2021; closing the Sapporo sales office and integrating order-taking functions into headquarters in 2022; and closing the Sendai resident office and integrating order-taking functions into headquarters in 2024.
