Overview
SandpiperCI is a privately owned retail and food-and-beverage operator based in the Channel Islands. Its business model combines wholly owned local retail activities with franchise and licensed operations for British and international brands in small, geographically distinct markets. The group has operated stores, restaurants, convenience outlets, property assets and service businesses across Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar. The company was formed on 27 June 2007, following the sale of its predecessor, CI Traders, to a private-equity consortium comprising Duke Street Capital and Europa Capital. CI Traders itself had been created in 2002 through the merger of Le Riches Stores and the Ann Street Group. The 2007 transaction created a broader retail platform with a portfolio of grocery, department-store, hospitality and other consumer businesses. In 2016, ownership reverted to a Channel Islands consortium. SandpiperCI has historically operated franchises and partnerships involving Marks & Spencer, Costa Coffee, Burger King, Iceland, Morrisons Daily, Matalan, Card Factory, Crew Clothing, Hotel Chocolat and Apple Premium Reseller stores trading as iQ. It has also operated locally developed businesses such as Checkers Xpress, Wine Warehouse, Le Cocq's Stores, Richards Newsagents & Post Office and The Gibraltar Bakery. Its Marks & Spencer franchise in Jersey is distinct from the independently operated Guernsey franchise, while its iQ stores have served Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. The group has repeatedly adjusted its portfolio through acquisitions, disposals, conversions and transfers. It sold the major Checkers supermarkets to Waitrose around 2011, disposed of Cimandis foodservice to Bidvest 3663 in 2015, and separated or sold several hospitality and retail operations. In 2018 it acquired Liberty Wharf, a St Helier shopping centre housed in a restored Victorian abattoir. Its grocery portfolio also changed substantially through a relationship with Morrisons: stores were converted to Morrisons Daily, and several Iceland, Checkers Xpress, Wine Warehouse and Morrisons Daily operations were transferred to Morrisons during 2024 and 2025. These changes reduced SandpiperCI's direct grocery footprint while preserving some local businesses, including Le Cocq's Stores under their existing name. SandpiperCI therefore functions less as a single-format consumer brand than as a regional operating platform. Its positioning is based on bringing recognised British retail, restaurant and service brands to markets where local scale, distribution and franchise management are important. The company also has or has had interests in property, shipping and logistics, publishing, brewing, baking and technology hire, although some of these activities have been run separately from the main retail portfolio.
History
SandpiperCI's roots lie in the Channel Islands retail businesses Le Riches Stores and the Ann Street Group. These businesses merged in 2002 to form CI Traders, creating a larger local operator with interests in grocery retail and related activities. Before SandpiperCI was established, CI Traders also had involvement in the Channel Islands operations of Safeway and had acquired or combined with other regional businesses, including the French soft-drinks manufacturer L'Abeille through the wider brewing and trading structure. On 27 June 2007, CI Traders was sold to a private-equity consortium consisting of Duke Street Capital and Europa Capital for £260 million. The resulting company was named SandpiperCI. Its strategy was to manage a portfolio of local businesses and franchises in markets where national chains often require a regional operating partner. The company developed or acquired operations across grocery, convenience retail, fashion, restaurants, cafés, specialist food and beverages, and property. SandpiperCI expanded its franchise portfolio during the late 2000s and 2010s. It opened its first Costa Coffee outlet in Jersey in 2008 and its first Iceland store in Georgetown, Jersey, in the same year. It acquired or opened Hotel Chocolat stores in 2011, added Crew Clothing in Jersey and later Guernsey in 2013, and operated Gourmet Burger Kitchen restaurants during the 2010s. In 2017, it acquired the iQ Apple Premium Reseller franchise in Jersey and Guernsey and later opened an Isle of Man store. The company also acquired Costcutter stores in 2017, converting them into Food Halls and Checkers Xpress outlets. The group continued to diversify its property and retail presence. It acquired Liberty Wharf in St Helier in 2018. The centre occupies a restored Victorian abattoir and became an important location for SandpiperCI's retail operations, including Matalan stores opened in Jersey and Guernsey in 2021. In 2019, the company opened Card Factory stores in three jurisdictions. In September 2020, it bought Le Cocq's Stores in Alderney, a local business founded in 1860. Richards Newsagents & Post Office in Alderney was acquired in 2022. SandpiperCI also disposed of or separated several operations. The major Checkers supermarkets in Jersey and Guernsey were sold to Waitrose around 2011, following regulatory processes. Cimandis, its foodservice wholesale and distribution business, was sold to Bidvest 3663 in 2015. CI Hospitality, which operated more than 80 pubs, was subsequently run separately as Liberation Group. The group also sold L'Abeille in 2009, while the Pet and Home Discount Centre shop-in-shop concept launched in 2014 and closed during the same year. A significant later change concerned grocery supply and ownership. In 2018, Morrisons announced a wholesale initiative with SandpiperCI, and 19 stores had adopted the Morrisons Daily format by 2022. During 2024 and 2025, Iceland, Checkers Xpress, Wine Warehouse and existing Morrisons Daily operations were transferred to Morrisons and converted or restructured. Le Cocq's Stores was retained with its existing name. SandpiperCI's Burger King restaurant in St Helier also closed at the beginning of 2025, and remaining Costa Coffee outlets were sold to a UK company around the same period. Ownership changed in 2016, when the business reverted from private-equity ownership to a Channel Islands consortium. In addition to its retail and franchise operations, SandpiperCI has been associated with property acquisition and development and with separately run activities involving shipping, warehousing, distribution, publishing, brewing, baking and technology hire. Its history is consequently one of regional consolidation, franchise development and continual portfolio reshaping rather than expansion under a single consumer-facing format.
